What makes my hair stand with this photo, is that I had this scene coming directly at me. I was sitting 50 yrds behind the crash site on a dirt mound. I had my camera zoomed in on the solo plane. when I saw him with his grear down, then raising them, I knew something wasn't right. It was like slo motion seeing a plane on fire coming staight at you. The force of the explotion thru me to the groung. I walked a German lady to the Red Cross tent with no hair and with much of her skin missing. I'll always wonder if she made it. I'll never forget the scene. Almost 20 years have passed and I remember the caos and the smell as if it where yesterday. My prayers go out to the families who lost somebody that day. |

Thanks for posting this picture. My thoughts and prayers remain with the families of the 88 who died and the hundreds injured that day. My son, 5 years old, and I were there for his first air show. We had the reverse angle of this photo. What a series of emotions and memories it brings back to mind. The cheers of the crowd as the maneuver was coming to completion, the comment to my son “he’s going to come close to make it look like a crash, but it won’t,” the silence as the fireball developed in the sky, the shrieking of the crowd as realization swept over them, the sight of the plane going in and the fireball rising to the sky followed by the muffled crump will never be forgotten. We turned to our front and only then noticed the pillars of smoke from where the other two planes hit. I guess the sound traveling over distances must have coincided so that all three explosions hit us at once. We were so focused on the solo planes tumult into the crowd that we hadn’t noticed. I wonder why I still feel guilty about that. |

The photo is just spectacular. The timing is amazing.
My dad was a USAF pilot for over 20 years. He thought Air Shows were such a waste of time. Every time something like this happened, he would get so agitated for a few days. Needless to say, this wasn't one of his better days. |

I will remember that day for all my life. My parents and I were on the motorway beside the airfield and while we were approaching Kaiserslautern I saw this great ball of fire in the sky. I didn't understood what happened, but when we saw that all the exits were closed and the rescue's helicopters arriving on Ramstein, we understood. That was a very bad day. I hope it wouldn't happened any more. My thoughts and whishes go to all the persons who were injured, those who died and all the witnesses of this drama. |

For information, a memorial munument with the rest of the 3 aircrafts is erected at "Museo del'aviazione". This is an open air museum located adjacent to the motorway between Rimini (Italy) and The Republic of San Marino. I visited it last year...scary! |

I was there as a spectator and put on emergency duty since I was an Army MP at the time. I lost two good friends as a result, one an MP and the other his wife who was in communications. We were there to enjoy the show and they were standing in the debris field. 88 people that day perished. |

HORRIBLE!!! That's the nightmare of every pilot on a very busy airfield like where I am flying myself in Austria. We just can hope it never happens again but we can't know it. I was reading out very much of this picture. We need photos like this too on airliners.net. Watching them is as important as reading accident reports. The picture is brilliant, but think about the people, who died there and their families, children, wifes ... Thank you! |

Since all these years I still have this picture, the cracking sound, the smell of exploded fuel and the sceaming of the crowd in my mind. I hope we will never have to see anything similar again. Great rememberous shot anyway! |

It's amazing that you caught all this on film considering it all happened so fast. I was about 9 months old and was living in nearby Kaiserslautern when this happened so I don't remember it. However, my parents were at home 20 miles away and said that they heard this loud explosion as it happened. We also had a few friends that were here at the Airshow but they weren't in the crowd that all the debris fell on...
However, it is still an amazing picture... |

Unbelievably spectacular! What a contrast in that the three pilots were killed or vapourized instantly and just a few feet a away, the other pilots had no idea what a happened. Condolences goes out to the families and friends to all the people lost that day. Lets hope that this image will never be captured again. |

You are one of a small handful of photographers who siezed this rare moment of tragedy. Please try reducing the darkness and contrast of your group impact shot- It may appear from the darkened details he solo pilot was literally vaporized on impact...thats deep! |

Yeah.. Thats a great photo. This crash happened 18 days after I was born. I was on base, but not at the show. My mom had to respond for medical purposes. Thanks to this crash, planes in the US can't fly over crowds anymore.. Great shot though. Brought a whole wave of fear and saddness, but I'm glad someone is remembering it. Great shot man. |
