Overview of Midway. If you look toward the top of the image, you'll see Senator Barack Obama's Presidential campaign plane parked and waiting--the only 757 visible on the field.

Beautiful overview of the fied...also drives home just how tightly squeezed into the neighborhood this airport is.

Fantastic, clear shot.
This airport however, is one of the most shocking and amazing I've seen. Who dumps an airport in the middle of a city ?

Nice shot at the bottom end of the photo there is a Southwest 737 exiting the runway and one holding short for the same runway how does that work?? I wonder how they got around each other.

Terrific photo. No 'authority' dumped Midway in the middle of Chicago, however. The airport has been in place for years and the city has grown around it. If I recall there was talk in the '80's of closure. Fortunately that did not occur as now it is a functional and much needed 2nd airport for the second city.

To my friend from Australia.

MDW wasn't "dumped" in the middle of the city. When it opened, it was actually in the COUNTRY/outskirts of the city!

Amazing shot, is anyone else confused by the 2 southwest aircraft on 22 Left. One exiting and one entering the runway?

When Midway was built this was all farm fields and actually owned by the local school district. The city came to Midway, and the area was developed long after the airport was established.

Great shot!

I'm sure they should've named the airport Chicago Mid-town (and then IATA code, MDW, remains) !!! it must be nice for spotters to have runways so close to public areas (with low approaches over the streets) even if there's not so much international airlines and widebodies down there...

Love the photo and love watching the ops at MDW. You've done a great job (on a very clear day) of capturing the sum total of the busiest square mile in the world. Although not as much fun since they put up the grey 'sound' walls and ATA went out of business (miss those 757's), it's still about as close as you can get to an airliner in the United States and NOT be in a terminal. As far as the Southwest 737's on 22L, I think the one on taxiway T holding short is stationary, not ready for takeoff quite yet. The other is back taxiing (back tracking) on 22L from taxiway N. When reaching the end (as it is doing) it will make a 180 turn and takoff on 22L. If you look downfield, you'll see a third Southwest 737 that has just landed 22L and is taking the highspeed exit at taxiway D.

What a beautiful entanglement of infrastructure...

The plane in rwy 22 L is not leaving the runway, it got in by one of the previois taxi ways, and is turning around to take off from the start of the rwy. The other one is just waiting as No. 2 for take off.

A classic example of why I have no sympathy for people who complain about airplane noise. This photograph should be shown to every city planner. Well done. Jim

Look at the neighborhood in near the top left corner: You've got a rail yard in your backyard and an airport to your front door... the noise must be hard to bear.

Nice picture of a great airport. I wonder if there's a vacant house in that neighborhood between the railyard and Midway. ;)
