Very steep and little high approach...

A visitor from India posted Wed April 29, 2009:
PAPI Indication is correct for the position of the camera used for taking this picture and not for the pilot in that approaching Big Baby on finals. Great picture

A visitor from Mexico posted Tue November 25, 2008:
I've landed already at that airport, and let me tell you it is amazing what pilots do to reach the ground, that is why this picture is great...it shown what a pilot can do whit a great plane!

A visitor from Canada posted Sun October 12, 2008:
Come on people think before you comment!
The aircraft is still miles back from the runway just turning final and is banking at little more than 30 degrees, the high vantage point only makes this runway look short, and the PAPI lights do not change colour, they have louvers that block part of the light depending on what angle you are viewing them from, in this case from above so you can just see the third light's white part over the red.
Yes Kai Tak was an exciting approach and this is a spectacular shot, but from an operational perspective there is nothing out of the ordinary here.

Cheers

Great photo, the angle is pretty deceiving, i bet he has plenty of room to like it up

It's a scary moment for the pilots

A visitor from United States posted Wed August 13, 2008:
To the visitor from canadia on monday march 10 '08

the papi lights actually dont change color its the angle that makes it to where it looks like it changes color

on each of the four little visible lights there all contained in a box

each box has 2 lights

one red one white

there situated one above teh other so that at certain angles you see different colors

you could look up more information on an online encyclopedia

A visitor from United Kingdom posted Fri August 8, 2008:
Great shot! It looks a bit dangerous...

A visitor from Korea, Republic Of posted Sat July 12, 2008:
As I know, Kai Tak airport is the one of the hardest airport to land. so, I've heard that the pilot dislike to go there.

A visitor from - posted Wed July 9, 2008:
Amazing shot. maybe the aircraft was doing curcuts

A visitor from - posted Sat May 31, 2008:
I just did an approach like this but ofcourse in a much smaller airplane :)

A visitor from Sweden posted Tue May 13, 2008:
Actually according to the PAPI lights he's at exactly the right height. On each side of the runway are two pairs of lights. He's got a red pair and a white pair which means he's at the proper altitude. Remember it this way. White white too much height. Red red and you're dead. Read and white you're alright.

A visitor from Finland posted Tue April 8, 2008:
Oh my god!

A visitor from United States posted Sat March 29, 2008:
He might run out of room to stop and go into the drink. I've never seen an airplane come in like this. This is an awesome photo.

A visitor from Canada posted Mon March 10, 2008:
It appears that he is too low though according to the lights.

A visitor from United States posted Fri December 7, 2007:

A visitor from United States posted Sun November 25, 2007:

A visitor from United States posted Tue November 20, 2007:
I think those red lights mean it's too low or maybe too high. I'm not sure.

A visitor from - posted Tue November 20, 2007:
No way, this 747 did not land... the other pilot taxiin probably had a heart attack.

A visitor from United States posted Thu November 1, 2007:
Excellent shot. The runway isn't really as short as it looks. Each of the white bars on the runway are 500ft apart. It looks to be about 10,000ft.

Awesome photo! I was lucky enough to fly into Kai Tak as a pax with Cathay Pacific in 1996. Anyone who has flown as a pilot will tell you the perspective of the runway shown in this photo is extremely deceptive and in all probability it is longer than you think. Remember the aiming points on any runway are roughly 300 metres in from the ends, in line with the papi's, big white rectangular marks on the surface and glide slope. When viewed in this light it is quite easy to see the runway is 3000 metres long. Also half a kilometre is only 500 metres, you'd do well to land a C172 on that!

A visitor from Australia posted Sat September 2, 2006:
Very dramatic use of telephoto perspective. Looks scary for that reason.

A visitor from Canada posted Mon July 10, 2006:
Awesome roller-coaster dip.

I have a question. Just curious. This photo says it was taken in 1998. That was the last year it was still open. But the runway was supposed to be over 3300m after final extension. Look at this! That can't be 3300m! Probably not even half a kilometer. P.S. Some other photos I've seen make more sense as the runway is MUCH MUCH MUCH longer than this. P.S. again: When was it last extended?

A visitor from Canada posted Fri July 7, 2006:
Great picture, what sweet landing

A visitor from Australia posted Fri June 30, 2006:
The angel of the bank and the way the nose is pointing down and also the angle - with the plane trying to line itself up makes this shot a great one

It doesn't look like a real photo, the plane looks superimposed on another picture of a runway.

A visitor from Canada posted Sun March 5, 2006:
Everybody that says the runway is too short are wrong. Kai Tak runway final extension made it 11200 feet long, thats enough to accomodate the A380.

A visitor from United Kingdom posted Sun February 12, 2006:
You appreciate the difficult of the approach

A visitor from United States posted Thu February 9, 2006:
From here it looks like the runway is only 5000 feet long. Imagine the fright of the 707(A330?)pilot having the largest plane in the world(at that time) heading toward you. Alejandro

This pic shows how gifted a pilot has to be, to land a plane on such a short run-way.. and the fact that the run-way is surrounded by the sea is great!

A visitor from United States posted Wed December 21, 2005:
At first It looks like he is dead meat, with the extremely daredevilist pitch act and the short looking runway, it inda makes me feel sorry for that co-pilot

A visitor from United States posted Sat December 17, 2005:
Did that plane actually land okay?

A visitor from Australia posted Thu December 15, 2005:

A visitor from United States posted Wed December 14, 2005:

It looks so high up from this prespective. It also looks like the runway is way too short for this 747. It ALSO looks like the 747 is about 2 secs from touching down. Great illusion. Great art.

A visitor from Netherlands posted Sat August 20, 2005:
This picture has everything in it.
There is action, and wideness which creates rest.
The picture is sharp on the edge so the photographer has used the best possible shuttertime.
The object of the picture is just in the middle which places the action in the centrepoint.
Very good picture in terms of used light circumstances.
Compliments to the photographer.

A visitor from New Zealand posted Fri August 19, 2005:
One of my more favourite photos. How scarry would it be to land the a/c? It must be a hugh task to maneouver a 747 to correctly line it up. Thank you very much Samuel for sharing it with us.
