XM693 (cn FL503) Gate guard at the Hamble Aerostructures plant. Notice the slightly unnerving ghostly character in the cockpit! Hamble has a proud aviation history: Amy Johnson learnt to fly here in 1932, the huge Armstrong Whitworth AW27 Ensign airliner was built here, Folland built the Gnat (including this one) here, the first Seafire (naval version of the Spitfire) flew from here in 1942, and the airfield played an important part in WW2, including the repair and sub-assembly of Spitfires. |
