The mechanic sitting next to me on CO957 told me that these "drainage ditches" are actually used as reservoirs to collect rainwater for drinking.

My guess for that drainage ditch on the airport runway is because this airport is right on top of the water and can flood easily when the ocean turns angry. Nice backdrop with the turquoise blue waters. It blends in with the overall scenery at this airport in the middle of the ocean.

Pictures like this one are the most interesting: remote places that are very very difficult to see instead the usual big and busy airport.

Not something you see everyday, but I have been to this airport on a short stopover going back to Hawaii from Micronesia. Beautiful water, and beautiful little atolls, but sure not much there! Thanks for sharing this cool shot!
