A visitor from United Kingdom posted Tue May 23, 2006: Awesome shot. Well done. By the way, the aircraft is probably not travelling supersonic. The misting effect you see is indeed due to shock waves, but these are created as the flow is accelerating (from a high subsonic Mach number) over the wing which is pushing the local flow supersonic. There is a rapid temperature and pressure increase through a shock wave, which in the right humidity can lead to misting.

Real gun-shooting just 300ft away from you in the middle of the swiss mountains.The best I´ve ever seen. And by the way, the pilots were not allowed to fly supersonic.

A visitor from Germany posted Wed October 26, 2005: To the visitor from Canada: I believe you know the effect called "Doppler effect" if for example a car drives past its sound seems to be higher if it approaches and lower if it goes away. Same here with a plane but this one is exactly as fast as the sound waves it emits! The result is the famous sonic barrier. The sound waves being nothing other than compressed air build this sonic barrier which becomes visible because of condensation of water in humid environment.
