OV-103 (cn OV-103) Those are not tumors but the aft orbital maneuvering system/reaction control pods on Discovery. In orbit, the Orbiter is controlled through controlled burns of the OMS/RCS. Upon re-entry, RCS pod burns control the Orbiter’s attitude and angle of desent.Below 45,000ft the RCS pods deactivate and the Orbiter becomes a glider.

Orbiter 103 has been the beast of burden with the highest # of missions (33) in Space. Discovery, the 3rd orbiter to become operational at Kennedy Space Center, was named after one of 2 ships that were used by the British explorer James Cook in the 1770s.
