44-86292 The "Enola Gay ". Perhaps the most famous B-29 sit on permanent display at the Smithsonian facility at Dulles. Assigned to the 393rd Bomb Squadron, 509th Composite Group, she flew the August 6 mission out the Mariana Islands chain. From this nose, the bombardier aboard dropped the atomic bomb, "Little Boy", on Hiroshima, resulting in approx. 90,000 people and approx. 20 American POWs dead. "Life is like a line drawn on water".
