A visitor from United States posted Fri March 13, 2009:Virtually a Pulitzer shot caught by accident. Download the shot and enlarge to view each part and and most can be identified as you reconstruct the flight paths. requires some fairly rare software but available to the public. As a video surveillance specialist I love the shot but the pilot in me is sickened by the subject matter. The aftermath was devastating to so many, may they rest in peace!
A visitor from Germany posted Thu January 22, 2009:Very sad and cruel moment in the history of air shows. After this disaster air shows of that kind have been prohibited here in Germany, as well as the figure performed here which led to the crash. Sadly it hasn't still been found out about the reason for the crash.
A visitor from Italy posted Fri December 12, 2008:The four planes of one formation fly away probably unaware of what has happened, the other two have a clear picture instead! The solo pilot(Nutarelli) is vaporized,Naldini probably tried to eject but with no luck, Alessio who knows. As a pilot I always immagine what the last thoughts could be in those moments...and suddenly I think of my son. My thoughts are for all those sons that will never see their father's again.
A visitor from - posted Fri April 4, 2008:This is a historic and very lucky shot. It also demonstrates the precision of a film camera, as compared to today
A visitor from Italy posted Sat March 8, 2008:One of our worst day, as italian and as a human...sigh is sad to remember...
A visitor from Austria posted Wed January 16, 2008:That photo is amazing. Sad it involves an accident, and I hope those who could eject where equipt with zero-zero ejection seats.

A visitor from United States posted Fri September 8, 2006:What makes my hair stand with this photo, is that I had this scene coming directly at me. I was sitting 50 yrds behind the crash site on a dirt mound. I had my camera zoomed in on the solo plane. when I saw him with his grear down, then raising them, I knew something wasn't right. It was like slo motion seeing a plane on fire coming staight at you. The force of the explotion thru me to the groung. I walked a German lady to the Red Cross tent with no hair and with much of her skin missing. I'll always wonder if she made it. I'll never forget the scene. Almost 20 years have passed and I remember the caos and the smell as if it where yesterday. My prayers go out to the families who lost somebody that day.

A visitor from United States posted Tue July 25, 2006:Thanks for posting this picture. My thoughts and prayers remain with the families of the 88 who died and the hundreds injured that day. My son, 5 years old, and I were there for his first air show. We had the reverse angle of this photo. What a series of emotions and memories it brings back to mind. The cheers of the crowd as the maneuver was coming to completion, the comment to my son “he’s going to come close to make it look like a crash, but it won’t,” the silence as the fireball developed in the sky, the shrieking of the crowd as realization swept over them, the sight of the plane going in and the fireball rising to the sky followed by the muffled crump will never be forgotten. We turned to our front and only then noticed the pillars of smoke from where the other two planes hit. I guess the sound traveling over distances must have coincided so that all three explosions hit us at once. We were so focused on the solo planes tumult into the crowd that we hadn’t noticed. I wonder why I still feel guilty about that.
A visitor from United States posted Tue July 25, 2006:The photo is just spectacular. The timing is amazing. My dad was a USAF pilot for over 20 years. He thought Air Shows were such a waste of time. Every time something like this happened, he would get so agitated for a few days. Needless to say, this wasn't one of his better days.
A visitor from France posted Thu July 13, 2006:I will remember that day for all my life. My parents and I were on the motorway beside the airfield and while we were approaching Kaiserslautern I saw this great ball of fire in the sky. I didn't understood what happened, but when we saw that all the exits were closed and the rescue's helicopters arriving on Ramstein, we understood. That was a very bad day. I hope it wouldn't happened any more. My thoughts and whishes go to all the persons who were injured, those who died and all the witnesses of this drama.
A visitor from United States posted Mon June 26, 2006:Ouch. That is not a pretty image. My thoughts and best wishes go out to everyone who was effected by this tragic incodent. Cheers -MR

A visitor from United States posted Mon June 19, 2006:This amazing shot is overshadowed by all the death and destruction that took place once the wreckage hit the crowd. My thoughts go out to the pilots, the crowd, and their families.
A visitor from United States posted Mon June 5, 2006:One of the darker days of aviation.
A visitor from United States posted Fri May 26, 2006:FRACK!!! That is horrible. My condolances also to the families and friends of those who perished that day.
A visitor from Belgium posted Fri May 19, 2006:For information, a memorial munument with the rest of the 3 aircrafts is erected at "Museo del'aviazione". This is an open air museum located adjacent to the motorway between Rimini (Italy) and The Republic of San Marino. I visited it last year...scary!
A visitor from Netherlands posted Thu May 18, 2006:Beautifulllll
A visitor from United States posted Sun May 7, 2006:A truly awesome shot of what happens when a pilot makes a technical error in the middle of a dangerous manouver.
A visitor from - posted Sat April 29, 2006:I was there as a spectator and put on emergency duty since I was an Army MP at the time. I lost two good friends as a result, one an MP and the other his wife who was in communications. We were there to enjoy the show and they were standing in the debris field. 88 people that day perished.
A visitor from Gibraltar posted Sat April 29, 2006:As Italian and great fan of our Air Force aerobatic team, I perfectly remember that day as one of the saddest of my life. Excellent timing but I agree the picture should be lighten a bit.
A visitor from United States posted Thu April 20, 2006:What the FRACK! That must have been a scary moment. Condolances to the families of the victims.
A visitor from Austria posted Tue April 11, 2006:HORRIBLE!!! That's the nightmare of every pilot on a very busy airfield like where I am flying myself in Austria. We just can hope it never happens again but we can't know it. I was reading out very much of this picture. We need photos like this too on airliners.net. Watching them is as important as reading accident reports. The picture is brilliant, but think about the people, who died there and their families, children, wifes ... Thank you!
A visitor from Germany posted Thu April 6, 2006:Since all these years I still have this picture, the cracking sound, the smell of exploded fuel and the sceaming of the crowd in my mind. I hope we will never have to see anything similar again. Great rememberous shot anyway!
A visitor from Pakistan posted Sun April 2, 2006:Fatal accident occurrs only once in life and great photos are taken only and only once a life...this is a great photo of all the time.
A visitor from Germany posted Fri March 3, 2006:It's amazing that you caught all this on film considering it all happened so fast. I was about 9 months old and was living in nearby Kaiserslautern when this happened so I don't remember it. However, my parents were at home 20 miles away and said that they heard this loud explosion as it happened. We also had a few friends that were here at the Airshow but they weren't in the crowd that all the debris fell on... However, it is still an amazing picture...
A visitor from - posted Thu March 2, 2006:Sweet O.O this is da coolest
A visitor from United Kingdom posted Fri February 24, 2006:Absloutely awsomme
A visitor from Canada posted Sun February 12, 2006:Unbelievably spectacular! What a contrast in that the three pilots were killed or vapourized instantly and just a few feet a away, the other pilots had no idea what a happened. Condolences goes out to the families and friends to all the people lost that day. Lets hope that this image will never be captured again.
A visitor from United States posted Fri February 10, 2006:The situation, position of the subject, and color contrast. The timing and framing is perfect.
A visitor from Mexico posted Tue February 7, 2006:I saw the video of this tragic accident at home. It was really impressive to see one of the planes of the Frecce goin´ to the ground and becomin´ a huge ball of fire. My condolences to the pilots´ families and the ones involved in this horrible accident. T.B.
A visitor from Italy posted Fri January 27, 2006:Hoping no one will have the chance to take another photo like this one...
A visitor from United Kingdom posted Fri January 20, 2006:Incredible!!!!
A visitor from United States posted Thu January 19, 2006:You are one of a small handful of photographers who siezed this rare moment of tragedy. Please try reducing the darkness and contrast of your group impact shot- It may appear from the darkened details he solo pilot was literally vaporized on impact...thats deep!
A visitor from United States posted Wed December 21, 2005:Not Good! look at the 4 jets flying beside the explosion they look like they did not even notice it. God rest there souls. A great mix of things are seen in this shot, Action, sadness, Perfect timing focus, And much more. Bring us more!

A visitor from United States posted Wed October 26, 2005:Yeah.. Thats a great photo. This crash happened 18 days after I was born. I was on base, but not at the show. My mom had to respond for medical purposes. Thanks to this crash, planes in the US can't fly over crowds anymore.. Great shot though. Brought a whole wave of fear and saddness, but I'm glad someone is remembering it. Great shot man.
