Not a place I'd ever like to find myself again. A forest fire off of the Kern River. Was stuck, and figured I may as well start shooting. What a shock it was to see this!

I love how it captures the two sides of the story...the fire and the fire extinguishing powder. Who will win?
You can see the power of the both combatants and know it will not be an easy fight

As an old P-3 Orion Patrol Squadron Mech, I still enjoy seeing 'The Hunter' live on in this perfect roll. You can see the 4 big Allison Turbo Props, fully pitched, to chew through the thick brown smoke. The flaps look to be set at about 30% for plenty of lift, and the bomb bay is big enough to bring plenty of chemically treated slurry for what should be a big hit with the crews on the ground, looking up, from the fire line. Yes, this shot says a lot in its 1/1000th of a second's worth of history!

I really like the way the photographer was at the same elevation as the plane when it dropped the retardant.

5 stars for the photo, but gee - that's a bit close for comfort. Regards, Chris.

I think our Government should consider the employment of larger aircraft for such jobs. No shortage of employment!

Amazing photo!!!! I love seeing any photo of an Electra/Orion airframe flying, but this...is art.

A note...this Orion (Aerostar) no longer has a bomb bay...the retardant tank is right on top of where it'd have been, and extending almost to where the sono launch tubes would've been. Also, the flaps look if not all the way down, pretty close....the flap tracks are fully exposed.

Photo tells a story of drama. Wonder if zoom brings it closer than it was. Re: comment about larger aircraft, they take longer to refill; might want to cycle smaller planes faster.
