A visitor from Germany posted Sun August 8, 2010: @ USA below, The Lockheed L-1329 Jetstar 731 also had this configuration. It can be seen in the movies Face Off and Goldfinger. The original 2 engined prototype was severely underpowered, earning it the nickname the Death Star (before Star Wars came out). However, since you're post was 4 years ago, you will likely never stumble across this again, but I just thought I'd share. Greetings from Deutschland. And lastly, fantastic picture :-)

A visitor from Australia posted Thu April 27, 2006: The blades at front are called Guide vanes, there purpose is just that, to stop the air swirling in front of the n1 blades behind it. They are standard on a low bypass turbofan like that, which does not have the big, relativly slow turning Fan of a high bypass design (the big engines on your modern aircraft). Similar, engines you'll see on jetliners still are the JT3/d's and equiivlents on 707s, DC-8s, and, most commmonly of all - the JT8D /-200. on 727s , DC9s MD80s! -majord

A visitor from United States posted Wed March 1, 2006: Nice shot. The first engine is moving, what happens it what you see there is a sort of protective grille in front of the fan's blades, it's an old design, I think is the same for the 707's engines, please somebody confirm.

A visitor from New Zealand posted Fri December 2, 2005: Yeah the first set of "blades" that are not moving are actually the inlet guide veins, they direct the inlet air onto the fan in a symetrical flow so that the compressor section will not stall, so the engine is going, and what a great picture, well done.
A visitor from United States posted Fri December 2, 2005: Nice! I like the composition! To those who are wondering if the engine is off: No, it isn't, the stationary blades are stators, they're in front of the fan and don't turn. You can see the fan itself as a blurred disk behind the stators.
