@ USA below, The Lockheed L-1329 Jetstar 731 also had this configuration. It can be seen in the movies Face Off and Goldfinger. The original 2 engined prototype was severely underpowered, earning it the nickname the Death Star (before Star Wars came out). However, since you're post was 4 years ago, you will likely never stumble across this again, but I just thought I'd share. Greetings from Deutschland. And lastly, fantastic picture :-)
Great photo! | |
Amazing! | |
Moveing shot. I flew from Mos to Vladiivostock in one of those II-62, and the plane was confortable, but old. And evenmore they was selling lottery tickets at the plane, whish worried me a little ;)
I think only 2 aircraft in the world had engines placed like thouse - Il-62 and VC-10.
Nice shot! The engines are running, but they have guide vanes for improved efficiency, which are stationary.
These engines aren't running?
Those are guide vanes, and prevents swirls ahead of the first stage of fan blades.....and increases the sucking power "efficiency" by directing air at the correct angle to the first stage fan blads......great shot....oops but i never ecperienced a flight
Good shot | |
Very clear photo and I believe it is rare to find such a shot!
The blades at front are called Guide vanes, there purpose is just that, to stop the air swirling in front of the n1 blades behind it. They are standard on a low bypass turbofan like that, which does not have the big, relativly slow turning Fan of a high bypass design (the big engines on your modern aircraft). Similar, engines you'll see on jetliners still are the JT3/d's and equiivlents on 707s, DC-8s, and, most commmonly of all - the JT8D /-200. on 727s , DC9s MD80s! -majord
Like everyone else said, it is beautiful!
It´s not Fan blades you see. The fan blades rotate as normal, The fan is behind it (such as a protection for the engine) Good shot!
I wonder why the first engines dosn't move? awesome shot!
Awesome ! Flew them several times. I´m in love with the IL62.Clasic & distinguished. RL787 from Buenos Aires.
It's a sight I have never seen before! Great View of the AC!
It`s perfect view | |
Nice shot. The first engine is moving, what happens it what you see there is a sort of protective grille in front of the fan's blades, it's an old design, I think is the same for the 707's engines, please somebody confirm.
WHOA!!! | |
Well done! | |
It looks like the first engine is'nt moving? Wonder why?
I had been to Leipzig during communist era and at that time saw an Interflug time table having a similar photo as front cover. Brilliant picture. Hope I could travel in one now
Very nice!!! I dream to see a view like this... I can imagine the music coming from these engines...
What a pity I never had the opportunity to fly myself in an IL-62.
Unique photo of a brilliant plane. The composition is perfect too.
That is great one, reminds me to my first trip on a IL62 in 1998, well I can tell you that it's not as calm as an Airbus but enough to enjoy the whole flight. Well done and very classic!
It's a classic | |
THE BEST Aircraft in the world!!!! Great Picture! For those who never flew iL-62 it is VERY smooth calm and not noisy inside!!!
Yeah the first set of "blades" that are not moving are actually the inlet guide veins, they direct the inlet air onto the fan in a symetrical flow so that the compressor section will not stall, so the engine is going, and what a great picture, well done.
Nice! I like the composition! To those who are wondering if the engine is off: No, it isn't, the stationary blades are stators, they're in front of the fan and don't turn. You can see the fan itself as a blurred disk behind the stators.
Unique Picture! That engine isn't off, those outer blades appear to be fixed to the casing - perhaps to stop FOD.
Very, nice detailed pict.
Wow that sit must be very noise throughout the whole trip
Amazing! It's not easy to see a bird like this flying, and even from this angle. I just love it! Russian technique is not as bad, as people think!
Great shot of Russian beauty!
This is a rare photo. It was taken in 1988 and uploaded in 2005. Nice engines anyway.
Great picture! Back to the seventies! Very seldom one sees a picture like this, specially on this aircraft. Always impressive to see the engines work hard from so close by.
A beautiful photo - a close-up and a long-distance shot all in one! Is the nearest engine shut down? Or are those first blades part of the fixed structure of the engine?
This is an AWESOME Pic! Great Shot!
A true 'Classic'. | |
That is fantastic. One gotta love these Ilyushins
WOW!!! These huge engines...
Now .. tell us about the sound :-)
As I love this aircraft I thank you for this picture! Truely shows what I am missing :-(. How was the noise ;)?
Beautifully rare!! | |
