This is a once in a lifetime airliner in that it was the first. No matter how much the U.S. media fails to mention it, it will always be the pioneer on which our Boeing, Lockheed and McDonnell-Douglas owe a debt of gratitude to as well as our great FAA investigative teams. We learned from the British (and Germans as well...) and on behalf of the American passenger jet industry, a standing ovation to the vision and sacrifices of Sir Geoffrey DeHavilland, the pilots and passenger who accepted the excitement and daring risk of the unknown, and the British airline industry.

Thanks Airliners.net, great photo. Just look at all that flap area. The Comet always reminds me of what a debt we owe to the air accident investigators every time we, or ones close to us, fly.

An everlasting classic that paid a high toll to the daring stake Sir Geoffrey De Havilland did in the aftermath of WWII: to take the first regular jet airliner into the skies. You won't be forgotten, flamboyant Comet! Even the Argies fell under your spell...

The De Havilland Comet is part of aviation history, the first jet airliner. Unfortunately, the Comet 1 suffered from metal fatigue, but the lessons learned were very important. If we fly confortably and safely today, it is a legacy from the investigation of the Comet 1 disasters. Many lives were lost, but we`ll never forget them. Farewell G-ALYP and G-ALYY. I love british airliners.
