Welcome to Lukla, Tenzing-Hillary Airport, Nepal situated at 9,100 feet above sea level. This is also the World's Most Dangerous Airport. Accident happened frequently with a downhill sloping runway (12% gradient) make things very interesting. Aircraft use runway 06 only for landings and runway 24 for takeoffs. Due to the terrain, there is no prospect of a successful go-around on short final. One word: Spectacular! [Nikon D300]

Great photo! Thanks for the detailed notes on this perilous airport. Looks like there is a crazy drop off at the end of runway 24. Just amazing airport, and as usual a fantastic photo.

As usual, Sam manages to get his camera into the precise spot to capture this stunning photo!
I'm wondering.......how do the folks living in this place manage to get all the blue paint up to this 9,100 ft elevation? Looks like they are really fond of "things blue"!

BTW, after looking at this photo again, if this doesn't get 20K views, there is no justice! I mean, who but Sam Chui would ever even "get" to this place! And look at that "runway"! (Looks more like a ski jump)

Spectacular capture! If you flew in there, thanks for taking the risk!

Approach it from the other side and make a procedure turn like in Madeira or Toncontin.

Brilliant shot! Only the best of the best pilots are allowed to fly in here - and only after intense screening/training. I will say this though - they need to extend that runway a bit and provide some kind of guidance. A published GPS approach for example - or maybe MLS.

Its best photo ever seen

GPS? MLS???!?!? 1) There are certain clearance standards for the construction of approaches, and a narrow valley like this would unlikely meet them. 2) Who in their right mind would purposely fly an IMC approach in said tight valley.. Great shot tho, VFR only! Ha..

You hear about cloudy and foggy conditions in Lukla all the time here in Kathmandu but Sam you got the perfect weather too. Well Done!!!

I would say Mars but I'm sure someone can show me a pic of Sam standing next to the Mars Phoenix Lander. :)

... and of course it is the Dornier 228, which is best suited for this kind of terrain...

Stunning photo! This is considered to be the most extreme airport in the world. There's no navigational aids around whatsoever... Only pilotage and dead reckoning, folks! Approach and landing on RWY 06 only (and only in VMC), you'll have to make it right from the first attempt, since there's no missed approach ( cliff at the end of the runway). Takeoffs RWY 24 only.

This is so wonderful

Why is it so dangerous? If I'm not mistaken Courchavel has an even steeper slope and even higher mountains around it. Maybe it's the pilots' qualification that makes it dangerous?
