The photo was taken from the hills which are often seen on the pics taken from the other side of the runway.

The "construction site" at the closer (eastern) end of the runway is a project aimed at extending the runway or at least extend the run-off. At present the runway is too short for a fully loaded, fully fueled 747 to take off directly to Europe. This is the reason why KLM's flight first stops at Curacao before heading to Schipol. Air France, operating the A340 flies directly to CDG.

On the right-hand side of the photo one can clearly see the reason why there is no full-lenght taxi way at SXM. Those are numerous small business premises and it is estimated that it would cost around $1bn to expropiate all of these in order to make space for a taxi-way.

I was waiting for a shot like this for few years. And here it is, finally not from the beach :). St. Marteen definitely needed shots from new angle.

Wow, SXM just keeps fascinating! And while most great pictures of SXM are from the beach side of rw 09, (to me) you have definitely captured one of the greatest shots of SXM. My compliments!

Congrats! Great angle! It looks like there is a construction site just by rwy27 threshold... does anyone know what is that for?
