Yeah, he is REAL low! If Air France had names for their aircraft like Pan Am did, we could call this one "Clipper of the Fence".

The position of the aircraft in relation to the spectators on the beach. Surely the engine wash would not be very good to anyone lying on the beach though?

This is such an amazing photo that I actually felt the need to confirm its authenticity with my cousin who is a pilot. He told me that not only was it an authentic photo, but an amazing thing to see in person as well. I think as a vacationer it would be awesome for about an hour or two, but after that point it wouldn't exactly be a relaxing tropical vacation!

It's as if it would be impossible to do this type of landing! This is unreal. A brilliantly captured aviation moment.

The feature that appeals to me is the (1) one of a time photo of an airliner (no doubt the pilot(s) flying skills) of just clearing obsticles and the closness of the people to the actual landing of the aircraft.

I've seen the same thing in action here in Tacloban City, Leyte Philippines where beyond the runway is a beach, but is not a resort and the airport only acommodate B737's and A320's. Only that, photographing of the aircraft is prohibited, can somebody tell me why do they prohibit such act???

Anonymous
You know, I HAVE to go there sometime just for the airplanes! I'm not a beach freak, but when you can be a few feet away from a 747 and not either be going in or out of it for another one of your "sit there for a few hours and be bored because you're not the pilot" yipeehahawhee flights; or about to be escorted disgracefully from the airliner ramp because you were out with the big guys when you weren't supposed to, it's REALLY worth it! Hahaha! :)
P.S., congratulations if you could follow me on that one!

Capturing the whole plane in the shot while panning perfectly and not having any blur makes this an awesome photo. You also get a good sense of scale with the people in the foreground and the buildings in the back.
Anonymous
I always thought this was fake until, that is, I went to St. Martin. Flying in over that beach is a really weird experience. You almost feel as if you can reach down and touch the people(that particular beach, btw, is probably the worst beach on St. Martin...it's tiny and, well, next to an airport!). Incidentally, the photo is probably taken from a outdoors bar that is quite popular during the day and early evening. I never saw a 747 land, but I saw one take off. But what's really freaky is that at the end of the runaway there stands this seemingly enormous mountain! Every plane, as soon as it lifts off, makes a sharp bank right to avoid hitting this mountain. Trust me, many Gin and Tonics were required before I got on the departing flight!!

This photo helps one understand what the travel books mean when they say "some airport noise". We've been to St. Maarten and I remember reading that comment about some of the hotels/condos prior to leaving. What a fabulous picture taken in a fabulous little island.

The best of this is when you aproach on TNCM the Airport doesn´t have ILS!! but you can make a VOR aproach so you have to be careful by no fly too low.

Well, he is certainly a little lower than usual, if you look at the lines on the runway, that marks there is a displaced threshold...

Since the first time I saw a picture similar to this, I said "I have to go there". And I did. This is MAHO BEACH in Saint Marteen. The runway is so short that big airplanes have to use every single inch of it. I was standing behind when an american airline 777 was blasting off. That was one of the best expirence of my life.

An early 747 just about to touch down at wonderous St. Marrtan. Great shot, this mid age A/C still doing the job it was designed to do. Carry On , doing a great job.

Timing is everything, and the timing of this pic at the exact moment of this jumbo on final could not be better!

My wife looked at this pic for awhile. Then, her eyes looked up and she said, "Hey, there's a plane in this picture!" How dare Air France barge in on her buttwatching!

It amazes me that this photo is still the most viewed on airliners.net despite the plethora of excellent SXM shots taken with the latest and greatest DSLRs!

This is a great pic, taken from one of the most iconic approaches in the world. It is especially rare, due to the overcast sky and rain clouds; compared to the usual bright blue sky without a cloud in site.

Can't get much lower than that....any lower, and the guy standing on the beach will get knocked out by the landing gear!

I was there in 2009 with my family. Unfortunately, there were no planes coming in on that morning when our cruise stopped in St. Maarten! I guess we came at an unlucky time :(. Better luck next time!

It looks awesome! I love it so, so much :O I was trying to get such photo maybe for a year, but my results are far away from this photo... Once again, wow! By the way... I took my best photos when I was visiting Ukraine. I think that time I had "Ukraine holidays" and I travelled with this https://baltictours.com/info/tours-in-ukraine/ tour. I saw so many places. The view was gorgeous. I will try to find my photos and add to this forum.
