View from out of the window from Business Class. First thing I saw when I woke up from my nap. My jaw just dropped. Air New Zealand ZK-SUJ in the latest "Lord Of The Rings" livery a 1000 feet below us.

Wow, u can see u hav'nt zoomed in because u can see the window! That must have been a shock, the closest i've seen is coming into Heathrow but not that close!

Why would the ATC be relieved? 1000ft vertical seperation is perfectly safe and legal when under RVSM.

Superb pic. i expect that is 2000' below rather than 1000 though as both aircraft are travelling in the same direction so would be separated by 2 flight levels. It does look a little small for only 1000 feet away too..
absolutely magnificent photo though, once in a lifetime shot.

Reminds me of my encounter with an Air France A343 while enroute BRU-JFK. The A343 wasn't THIS close though. Good thing you woke up at the right moment. Exceptional shot! 5 stars!
