F-WWOW (cn 001) The cockpit of the A380....my first ever upload of a cockpit picture and the first pic of the A380 cockpit. No idea what everything means, but it is certainly impressive! You can see the location of the aircraft by looking at the GPS on the EICAS and also a view of the aircraft from the tail camera view [Nikon D70]

Great cockpit - excellent photo. Nice to see they laid on a games screen plus joysticks so pilot and co-pilot can take each other on during the boring sections. Looks like a single person game of space invaders is running on the lower of the middle screens.

Having sat in the pilot's seat of Concorde at Manchester Airport, I am impressed by the contrast of the flight controls and the amount of space for the crew. I am 5' 6" and had difficulty getting into the seat, but was told that most Concorde pilots are at least 6' tall.

A visitor from - posted Tue May 19, 2009:
To me it looks like a (very) good user interface in software: simplicity and capability (old Boeings cockpit seem more mind blowing to me); as to the "small joystick", I always flew the 747 in MFS with much sensitivity (may seem paradoxical, but with more margin for "big action" you end up having greater control because you'll do everything most easily and feeling that the control is at your fingertips) and in landings I only pitched without the trim for flaring and the correctional bankings were done on a milimetrical scale :)

Wow is all I can say, this is absolutely marvelous! I really want to be a pilot.. sadly I'm still 12 but I practice a lot on MFS and I know some people who are pilots. I really enjoy flying and wish to be an Airbus pilot one day. The shot could have been slightly better if it was flying at night with the panel lights on, however it's still incredible.

One thing bothers me though... doesn't it seem very strange to be flying the World's LARGEST airliner using just a less than half-foot joystick? o_O

Great picture of a great cockpit!

I was surprised by seeing Windows operating software on the computer screens. I thought Airbus would probably have written their own OS...
Furthermore, I'm surprised by seeing that the captain must fly the plane left-handed, while the FO is flying right-handed (check the joysticks). I'm right-handed myself, and I would probably be a bit confused as captain. Try for example to control your mouse with your not-used-to-hand... However, I'm not a captain (unfortunately) and I assume they're having enough training to get used to it :P.

A visitor from United States posted Wed April 26, 2006:

Its neat and not too crowded with all instrumentation neatly and compacted in placed. Pilot too can relax same with passengers in flight. An ordinary individual can probably fly it the way it looks. Like a video game..

Looks like the captain must be left handed to manage the stick. What if the co-pilot promoted to captain? Might have some degree of difficulty handling the stick control. It could have been perfect but with no coffee handler??

About the "windows" things: Electronic Flight Bags as they were installed on B777-300ER are made of 2 separated computer systems on each side of the cockpit, the master system being Linux and the second one Windows. They hold just some PDF like files (at least vectored graphics) and as a matter of safety you can still have the paper version with you while flying just in case...
So even if the 2 screen shows Win95 it's not an issue with safety as the flight controls units and FMS are made of wery different birds and OSes than your most stable public version of Linux

A visitor from Brazil posted Tue November 15, 2005:
Wow... Now the pilots can fly on Flight Simulator while are flying for real!! Beatiful!

A visitor from United Kingdom posted Tue November 15, 2005:
The "electronic flight bag" on the widescreens is running on Windows 2000. Jeppeson sells them - they've been on the 777 for a few years now - and they are Windows - but the more
stable and longer lived Win2000 is the OS.

A visitor from Australia posted Tue November 15, 2005:

OK - other planes look similar already. Just the big screens on the side are bigger. And the keyboard is new. And yes, there is a lot of room to the sides. If wonder whether the pilots are abel to look out of the side windows without to leave their seats? ;-)

Maybe no pilots but software eengineers are flying. On route they have to work as a software developer ;-)

A visitor from Canada posted Mon November 14, 2005:
Picture is excellent. If it is indeed some Microsoft OS on the flight deck, even if it does not control the aircraft, I am more worried about pilots being distracted by something not working and that is not what you want with 555 pax behind them.

On the international space station, they also have Windows machines also for non critical stuff, and the crew ends up spending much time fixing problems on those machines.

I can't believe Airbus would be stupid enough to put 2 Microsoft boxes in the cockpit. I would hope that Airbus make a very public statement about this denying there is any microsoft software in the cockpit otherwise the public will avoid that aircraft like the plague.

I hope those computers will be running Mac, not Windows. If they're running Windows, I hope the airlines at least install flightsim, so that their pilots can have some fun. AIM and MSN messenger might be nice too...:

Great! Looks like they removed the handle to blow away the emergency exit.
BTW it's only the electronic flightbag that runs on windows, which is separated from the rest of the system. Imagine to play Fs2004 in the cockpit with the actual A380 controls...

When the plane is on autopilot, the real pilots probably play a multiplayer race on nd 4 spd undgrnd with all of the passengers. imagine if all of the passengers joined in!!! there would be 555+ caqrs in one race. LOL!!!

A visitor from France posted Sun November 13, 2005:
Maybe the pilots can play Microsoft flight simulator or need for speed during the flight? Maybe even a multiplayer game with the passengers?

Great photo, great flight deck. And no, no Airbus out there runs on windows but on Airbus proprietary software. The big computer screens are the EFB I believe(Electronic Flight Bag) and although it looks like windows, I doubt it is.

The WhaleJet runs on Windows OS? Oh-oh. Not good. Wouldn't like to be the pilot and have the computer freeze at FL360. "Ummm, ladies and gentlemen. It seems Windows has crashed..." or "Ladies and gentlemen, we have been flying in circles for the past 8 hours, due to some minor software problems with our Windows OS. We will stop when the new fix is downloaded and installed."...
Sheesh... apart from that slapstick humor, the cabin looks amazingly modern... Absolutely impressive.

I think these round grayish things hold pointing devices (track balls). Front part of the tablet can be turned to cover the keyboard part. The tablet is probably stored directly under the cam screen. On the copilot's side you can see a shiny part, which should be the outer right of the tablet.
