 A visitor from - posted Thu July 8, 2010:What a great shot! I grew up in the town behind that "hole" and remember taking off from that runway and flying right by the quarry. Every Thursday there was a series of blasts as part of diamonds mining, the whole town would shake like in a 3-4 magnitude earth quake - they used a whore railroad car of TNT. A visitor from Germany asked "how they got down there". Easy - there are berms on the sides of the quarry allowing huge 120-tons Komatsu and Caterpillar trucks to go down. Takes 20 minutes to go down and 40 minutes to go up. The depth of the quarry 550 m, length 1200 m, width 800 m. For the history of Mirny airport two airplanes fell into it - an Antonov-26 (with a load of salami) and Ilyushin-76. | |
