Awesome photo Christian, and congrats on your first photo of the new AA livery. Of course, congrats American for the mark of the start of new changes. Welcome Aboard. :)

The tail is horrendous, the fuselage text and logo is great. They should have put the new logo on the tail. The sorry excuse for an American flag looks like it was drawn by a 5 year old for clip-art in Microsoft Word.

This is a good livery, but I cannot believe that they would change the logo after decades! Congrats, AA!

Not impressive at all. They should have done more of an American flag on the tail and painted the body white.

I think: not too bad, but seeing where they come from still a major disappointment. Strange that people get paid to design and others to approve this. Missing the Eagle.

Nice golden lighting and crisp. Not liking the new AA scheme. I'd be the first to say that AA needed to update their' 60's design but this is just wrong. Somehow it reminds me of Walmart... cheap and tacky.

I'm as patriotic as the next guy, but horrible livery. Too much of a radical departure from the traditional AA.

Hey, at least we still have the beak from their iconic eagle :)
I'm sure they were not too excited about dropping the bare metal livery but with the 787 joining their fleet they had no choice. The silver is a good alternative to bare metal, the new titles and logo are not bad either, but that tail design?! I hope it won't stay for too long.

Finally! It's about time American started modernizing their fleet (ideally, they would get such aircraft as 787s and A380s, or more 737s to replace their aging MD-80 fleet, but I guess this is a good start)

4 star picture, with no watermark when you really don't need one = 5 star picture.

Great picture. But is it just me or did American get the flag wrong? The Blue is in the top LEFT corner, clowns.
Anonymous

I hate the tail.... I do like the grey, I like the font of American, everything else is good.... but that tail is hideous.
Anonymous
I guess if AA had placed a wavy flag on the tail then everyone would say they ripped off the design from BA. The tail is all wrong. The American font is fine but too big and gets 'choppy' with the windows. Place it above the windows or figure a way to make it be a bit more bold. The only things to like since they really can't polish carbon fibre on their up coming 787's is the silver/grey and the 'semi eagle logo' ahead of the American title. That tail is just killing it. Nice picture of a bad design by the way. Sorry.

Five star shot, Christian, but I'm underwhelmed by the new livery. I have to agree with the comment that it is reminiscent of a Greyhound bus. The grey is more of a mistake than the tail; I think the design would be improved a great deal if the main color was white.
Anonymous

Gonna go against the tide here - I think the tail is great, as well as the logo. I wish they would've kept more of the metallic look, now it's just... grey.
Anonymous

One of the ugliest tails I've ever seen. The design could be OK for the winglets, but not for the tail. And the eagle is... not an eagle. :-(
On the other hand the colour is fantastic, as is the american title.

The picture really good, thanks.

I like it. At airports everyone will instantly recognise these tails. The recurrence of the red white and blue at the front nicely balances the design. The only thing I wonder about is the font type, perhaps something slightly more frivolous (and black) might have been nice.

WAY to busy on the tail. Horrible artwork. Great color on the fuselage.

How come that tail design makes me think of the Texas flag or Texas in general, not "American Airlines"?
Anonymous

Nice picture, another boring monochomatic and terrible livery go back to the previous one. i undetstand aircraft materiales technology but aluminum can be painted. natural metal and previous aa logo will be missed

Gotta wonder how much was spent on this redesign. I know the shiny silver scheme was decades old, but it was absolutely iconic. A minor update/variation of that would have been better.
Anonymous

They totally killed the last interesting livery on earth, the bare metal was amazing. Now it`s just one more "look at the tail to find out who" airline. A pitty!
Anonymous

The new logo on the tail is absolutely fantastic! On the other hand, the loss of a metallic livery is a wrong move.

Great shot. Love the fuselage writing and logo but the tail is dreadful. Maybe it'll grow on me.

They can do a festive version of this on occasion, where the red and white stripes envelop the entire hull:)

Why American, why????
Anonymous

Wost thing about it is probably that the previous livery is so much American Airlines, probably one of the 100 or 50 most recognisable brands in the world... and this is not necessarily horrible to me, just way more random and yeah horrible in relation to the previous one.
And the 787 is to me not really an excuse for this grey instead of polishing, the 787 also has some metal in it, and just have them look a bit different then, so what? You would not suddenly mistake it for another airline. Anything better than this drab grey.

Will such efforts help improve service quality ? Check Skytrax to see how much AA is complained. Not a single complaint was about the old livery.

When you compare this picture with one of a similar aircraft in the 'old' colours, the former livery looks quite dated. So, it is a change I can live with. My wife thinks the new design is great.

It's replacing maybe one of the most iconic liveries out there, so it's gonna take some time to get used to. Seeing it in person up close should do it better justice. I like it. Great photo.

AA needed to spend some more money, did they? Why ruin an iconic paint scheme, spend millions repainting the entire fleet, and then make it look like a flying Greyhound bus? The millions they are going to spend on repainting time, materials and down aircraft would have been better spent ensuring job security for their employees (no, I am not one of them. Nor do I know any) A sad end to the iconic chrome aircraft with their definative red white and blue stripes. -From Canada.

To the "patriot" below -- when shown on moving vehicles, such as on the fuselage of an aircraft, the flag should be reversed so that the Union can be displayed on the upper left corner, as per the U.S. Flag Code.

I love it. We all know they couldn't keep bare metal in this day and age so I think this is a clever way to take the brand forward. The logo still looks simple but a bit more interesting, the large titles are OK but a little untidy with the window cut outs, the grey looks perfect and I really like the fact that they kept the red, white and blue stripes...and kept them straight and not wavy! I'm looking forward to seeing a picture of a bunch of those tail fins lined up at the gate. En masse they should look powerful.

As a glass half full kinda guy, I think it's not too bad, at least they didn't go for a boring Euro white. Their timeless livery may be gone in the near future, but at least they're still kicking, unlike Northwest & Continental!

No. Now, when an American Airlines plane has landed, nobody (of the normal non-aviation people) will know until they see it from up-close.
'What a patriotic fancy new budget carrier! Btw where are the American Airlines' jets hiding?'

Watch the new video of the re-branding of American. It actually makes sense and a lot of $$ went into it. The tail design was designed around the idea of several aircraft parked next to each other and it creates the illusion of 1 really big American Flag.
Anonymous

I don't know what to make of this new paint scheme as I have a few mixed views about it. I suppose the airline needed to change it if it wanted to portray an image of moving forward and being modern and not a sense of being stuck in the past. But I loved the traditional bare metal livery that had become unique to American and is now so rarely used. Though this new livery may grow on me like the Finnair one did.
Anonymous

Its not that bad, me think its actually alright as some other liveries are worse. Don't understand why some people are complaining about the tail, atleast its the American flag. Unlike the flag carrier across the pond, which back in 97 had designs of every other country apart from its own on the tails.

Horrible livery! It reminds me of the bland AEROFLOT livery circa early 90's. Take a look at an Aeroflot A310 from 1993-94, and compare the two to see what I mean.

Clean sky background and a good display of the aircraft. Obviously shot from ground while plane was landing. I like having a chance to see the new livery on an actual plane.
