In the beginning of the wide-body wars American had staked its future on the DC-10 while many of its competitors opted for the 747 which went into production earlier. American owned and operated a number of 747-123s, but it was never a favorite. They were disposed of in the early 80's when Bob Crandall became CEO. AA did continue to operate two 747SPs on the DFW to Narita (later JFK to LRH) run, but they were replaced in the early 90's with MD-11s.
