Aviation Photo #0919817 Boeing 777-223/ER - American Airlines

[ Medium Large ]
1 of 1
Taken with a 8mp Olympus Evolt 300, used a 50-200mm zoom lens with full 200mm. I was doing Aerial Mapping across the departure end of Runways 30L/C and I just happen to get as close as 500ft from an American 777 departing at 1300 LCL

I always thought 777 wing tips were squared... apparently not... this one as a slight angled wing end... not a winglet nor a wing[whatever] like the 777-300ER has... kewl! LOVE THE SHOT!!!!!

This photo says so much I can't write it all. It is so sharp you can see every detail of the aircraft. Not only can you see the pilot in the cockpit, but you can see the expressions of the people on the ground. The detail is so crisp,If you had the time I'm sure you could identify dozens of interesting observations in the square mile of ground below the aircraft as well. No wonder you have to be so careful entering your pin number at the ATM!

Very Impressive Cecil but one is moved to ask is it operationally acceptable for ATC to allow other aircraft within 500ft of an airliner that's just rotated from runway 30L/C over suburbia and presumably climbing?

Anonymous
Fantastic photography and beautiful picture! However, I have to agree with others in that if indeed you're at 500ft from the 777, you are way too close for safety. I find it hard to believe that you were allowed to be that close or that an Air Force jet didn't intercept you coming this close to an airliner. Also, the aircraft doesn't seem to be in a climb angle.

I can assure you that everything was pre-coordinated with ATC. If you look into the minimum separation that ATC is to allow between aircraft, it is 500ft. Everything was legal and The American 777 did level off and we both maintained visual separation. I do this all over the US. I have many more shots, this close. I just haven't had time to post them because lately I have been busy with Mapping The Hurricane Katrina Damage inside the TFR.

It is a unique photo perspective as it was taken from above while in flight. Some portions of the plane appear in flight and other portions make it look like parked on the ground. Pay close attention to the blur created by the jet engine exhaust over the roof of the houses and over the avenue and parked cars. Now look at the wing tips and the altitude perception to the ground. Now look at the cockpit area and the ground immediately below...is the plane on the ground with the nose wheel parked next to the bush?...
I am just describing the perspective effect on the photo. I think the timing of the photo... Being at the right place and moment is awesome.
Congratulations to the photographer. Well done!

I hope whom ever thinks this shot is a photoshop hoax....appreciates The fact that there just might be a few small bright spots in the hard and long day of a mapping pilot, as he methodically flies along his predetermined grid path, photographing every square inch of earth on the planet, eight to ten hours a day, seven days a week for the last eighteen months, dreaming of being the pilot of an aircraft like the one he happened to capture in this photo. I have been watching him diligently work day after day since he was a little boy trying to reach this dream. We bought him the best camera with the best zoom lens we could afford and told him to take pictures of everything interesting he could, because one day he would want to look back on these times and he would really appreciate them later. He has done exactly that. This is really the first photo he has had time to publish, since he is now off documenting the Katrina disaster area. One day he might have time to publish some of the other thousands of photos he has taken since we bought him the camera. Cecil (Sam) we are very proud of your many talents. Mom and Randy xxxooo

Great Shot!
In case any of you were wondering what a T7 was doing at San Jose, American operates a once daily flight from SJC to Narita. Because there is such a large concentration of Tech companies in the San Jose area (Silicon Valley), there is a high demand for a direct flight from SJC to Tokyo. And in regards to the LA suburb comment, San Jose is the third largest city in California, larger than San Francisco, and is the 10th largest city in the US, and is in the San Francisco Bay Area which is the fifth largest metropolitan area in the United States, with an estimated 7 million people.

Rare shot, once again!
Now, i really feel i should apologize for the comment i posted quite some time ago about the background of the picture when i called it "a stuffy LA suburb" coz it seems i hurt quite some people's feelings and that was never my intention! I did not check where the photo was actually taken (which is rare with me) before i posted the comment and since it seemed like a stuffy suburb i mistakenly assumed it was los angeles, so please, DO NOT try and explain where San Jose is and how big and important it is coz i DO know about the city, i DO know about Silicon Valley even though i live about 10000 km away in a beautiful (but small) country you probably never even heard of! so spare the lecture and the unnecessary data for your friends and their world renown illiteracy of geography and just enjoy the wonderful and diverse pictures this page has to offer! and remember, visitors here truly are from ALL over the world!
thanks, and sorry once again

This photo is simply jaw dropping. This photo reminds me photo's shot from B-17's flying in formation. Captures the sheer elegance and beauty of the Big Boeing...

Is it just me or do I see an optical illusion regarding the angle of the engines in relation to the fuselage? It can't be, but the intakes seem to be slightly pointed towards the fuselage.
