Remark Photographer
PH-MCS / CS-503 (cn 48618/584) Just when I thought I had seen everything when it comes to condensation in July last year on a KLM MD-11, this Martinair MD-11 comes along and made me rethink what I knew. The vortices on this thing are way beyond and are the very best the MD-11 can produce! Strangely enough the other MD-11s that morning didn't produce nearly as much.

Sometime in your life comes that one photo that makes the rest seem dull. beautiful colours, excellent position, and what vortices!!!! any light aircraft following--- watch out!! great pity that we can only give 5 star rating.......KeiSan,Poole,UK.

A visitor from United States posted Tue February 17, 2009:
The relative size difference between the wingtip vortices and those on flaps really demonstrates how much lift is being produced with this heavy and "dirty" guy.

A visitor from Germany posted Thu January 29, 2009:
So this one was the heaviest

A visitor from Ireland posted Mon December 22, 2008:
Rarely have I seen a photo of such breathtaking quality.I can only describe this photo as what it is,stunning.I never knew there were such vortices as shown it this work.Well done to all concerned!

That is the most amazing condensation picture i have ever seen on this site..... shows just how low the pressure gets above the wings and what helps these giants fly.

A visitor from Netherlands posted Wed April 23, 2008:
Great picture. I never knew that one airplane could generate that much vortices! Really great!

A visitor from United Kingdom posted Tue March 6, 2007:
Perect illustration of what following pilots should be aware of.. Terrific humidity humps on the wings casting off into wake turbulance from the flap edges- BEWARE! Also shows small wakes from wing tip fences, proves they do work.

A visitor from New Zealand posted Sun September 3, 2006:
Every aspect of this photo shows an expert at work. The aircraft fills the frame and the photographer's position, angle, lens size and non-distracting background are perfect. The spectacular vortices (beyond the photographer's control)have been captured at the "right" moment.

This photograph demonstrates the wing and tail tip vortices and the pressure change on the top wing surface. note also the votex from the flap section.

A visitor from Korea, Republic Of posted Wed June 28, 2006:
Excellent- perhaps the greater vortices can be explained by a heavier landing weight than the other MD-11s you saw...cargo is like that!

A visitor from Poland posted Wed June 28, 2006:
Cool shot !!!

A visitor from United States posted Wed June 28, 2006:
It seems to me a perfect balance of form, composition, and content. When I look at it I almost feel like I'm there! Really!

A visitor from United States posted Wed June 28, 2006:
Perfect place at the right time, 15 years working around planes very nice.

A visitor from United States posted Wed June 28, 2006:
The clarity and color of the sky, absence of clouds, and intense vapor coming off the surfaces make this shot very special!

A visitor from Spain posted Tue June 27, 2006:
A good photo of the MD11. It is a ghostly shot with the red skies and clouds of condensation from the rear. I wonder what the passengers thought

A visitor from United Kingdom posted Tue June 27, 2006:

A visitor from Spain posted Mon June 26, 2006:
Amazing condensation on a beautiful machine. love the MD11

A visitor from Spain posted Mon June 26, 2006:
This picture not only is beautiful for its colour-distribution and its balance, it gives in a single shot all the explanation of what makes an airplane fly. if you tell somebody that where air is less dense its temperature goes down, one can actually see the lift/condesation that pulls the plane upward and how the fuselage does not contribute to this fenomenon on which a hole industry feeds. best regards, thomas-michael
