2FTS Macchis dominated Pearce for 20 years. Replaced by PC-9s & Hawks. Photo by my father, Peter Eyre. A7-018 first flew 11/06/68, del 04/07/68. W/o 05 Apr 1988 - departed Rwy 18 on an instrument training sortie, engine failed. Instructor, SqnLdr Frank Atkins, jettisoned canopy and Plt Off Andrew Richardson ejected first, followed by Atkins - both suffered minor injuries. A7-018 was at 700ft & 120 kts, and crashed into Twin Swamps Nature Reserve, 2nm south of Pearce. With full fuel, it started a large bush fire, lasting several hours.
