Aviation Photo #1021719 Boeing 737-46B - BRA Transportes Aereos

[ Medium Large ]

Aircraft attempted to land on a wet runway 35L, and, noticing that it would not stop, the pilots did a great job getting the plane of the runway to the taxiway, otherwise they would hit the avenue right after the threshold. Notice how close the aircraft got of falling down the little hill. Great job, pilots [Canon S2 IS]

That's impressive. Now how come the Southwest pilots couldn't do the same thing in Chicago?

We almost had a big accident.
In front of Congonhas there is one avenue with heavy traffic.
The pilots saved a lot of lifes in this plane and out of the plane too!
Congratulations!

The pilots did a swell job! But they still got lucky the plane stopped when it did, look at that drop just ahead of it! Nice shot also. Very sharp!

Imagine the pilots deployed the slides and people were jumping from the front door...

After this accident, authorities and crew members as well are questioning Congonha´s landings on rainy days . Some argue that Gongonha´s runaway is not so safe when it comes to wet landings. Others say the runaway is ok, but thay should install containtion nets to brake planes and hold them still in case of a slide out of the runaway.

I think the pilots took the airline name too literally... Very good shot.

The airlinename BRA, is the word for good in Swedish...and this was good.. or...not...!

Nice and sharp picture...

Can't get much closer to disaster than that! I wonder if the pilot intentionally veered left into the grass at the end. It apppears that may have added just enough friction to stop in time.

That´s what I mean luck in life. Imagine the plane had slided down on the road...

This plane had hydraulic problems at Salvador, the last stop of this flight before Sao Paulo.
The airline blamed the runway for the accident, due to alleged bad draining.
Airport administration denied this claim, citing the runway as perfectly safe.
Who's to blame? A complete investigation is under way and will answer that question.
Brazil has one of the best aviation safety records in the world, and thank God the plane did not fall into the avenue.
The avenue by the runway has eight lanes, and is always packed with heavy traffic.

Why it is a given a name "BRA"

I've landed in Congonhas before just after a rainstorm. The runway was still full of waterspots. Looked like bad drainage, as usual. This pilot did a great job creating some friction thru the mud thus stopping the plane.Lucky people !

It looks like more that a little hill, There is a cement wall and what looks like a fairly large dropoff. Note the top of the tree level with the ground.

Great job by the pilots for saving what could have been a disaster. No points for guessing what color their shorts were after this landing! "Pardon me, I need to use the washroom." Kudos to the photographer for being in the right place at the right (wrong?) time. Good job!

Wow!
That was close!
Congratulations for the pilots.
And "BRA" means Brasil Rodo Aereo
Anonymous

To avoid bad translations: BRA stands for Brasil Rodo-Aéreo, and it does not means "Brazil Aerial Broom", as someone said before. "Rodo" is short for "rodoviário", which means something like "road related" - before it became an airline, BRA operated terrestrial travels only, then begin to sell charter flights [hence the "aéreo"] and later on regular ones.

Our family lived in Sao Paulo in the early 80s. We know Congonhas! What I liked about the photo is that it so clearly shows the context, the surrounding neighborhood!

Nice photo, but why would anyone congratulate the pilot for doing a fine job when it was his fault for causing the incident in the first place. If he had done his job the aircraft could have been stopped in time. There are procedures for landing on contaminated runways and apparently they were not followed.

Necessary to evacuate with the slides??? I've also problems seeing what good the pilot did beside that he managed to stop the mass afer a huge misstake in the first place. Nice shot anyway!

That was the exact point where TAM A-320 PR-MBK escaped the runway more than one year late, in 17/07/2007, overpassed Washington Luis Avenue and collided whith TAM Express building, killing 199 people.
