I have been on at least a half-dozen when this happens; it sounds like someone hit the window with a baseball bat. While quite shocking, it's not as dangerous as one might think, only the outside pane of an extremely thick sandwiched polymer makeup is cracked. That slice is not part of the structural window anyhow. This is exactly why the pilot and FO window heat circuitry are completely seperate.

The rain water on the other hand, is in softer focus and streamlined with the airflow over the precarious windshield. Including the three autopilot lights which show that the pilots are taking no chances and using the autoland feature. Then there are the colorful runway approach lights highlighting all of the mentioned effects. Then there is the general realization of how dangerous the whole situation is, Any landing, this one with a cracked windshield, in the rain with crosswinds, windshield could further shatter if a hard landing, slick runway. It's all quite amazing. This one is going to be tough to beat for a long time. It's a classic. It's a keeper. It's a hall of famer. Quintessential Airliners dot net.

A visitor from United States posted Fri January 22, 2010: The photo is impressive for sure but there are two windows in the airplane and I am sure that the other pilot could see just fine. This window has two panes, a inner and outer, the outer is heated and will crack every now and then, the inner is the considered the structural pane and you have very little problems with it. While it looks scary it isn't fatal.
