This airplane never got a fair chance. The Bureau Of Aeronautics simply refused to look at it long enough to judge the airplane!

My understanding is the test version of the X-32 had limited lift function at the time of the competition with the F-35. Boeings design was lacking in vertical lift during test. As far as the F-35 today, British pilots are now in the US training along side American pilots and they report they are in awe of the F-35 capabilities. The F-35 will more than compliment your Eurofighter.

Mirror Mirror on the wall who's the ugliest in the skies?
Ugly indeed Luckily lost the competition. But nice pic.

A visitor from United Kingdom posted Fri July 12, 2013:
Like F-35.

As an American I am proud of aviation history and one classic design after another to come off our factory floors. From a P-51 to a F-22 to our space program we turned out designs to last the ages. This one is not one of our finest moments.

This looks like something you'd find on a Saturday Morning cartoon or as a character at an amusement park! (TW2 - Turd With Wings)

A visitor from - posted Fri July 13, 2012:
Ok admitted, the wing needed some overhaul on this baby, but am i one of the few that actually likes this plane? I think it looks bad ass.

A visitor from Austria posted Thu May 19, 2011:
It lost for many reasons; first it would have never flown with that wing operationally; during the competition Boeing came up with a total redesign with sharply swept wings and seperate elevators.
It had severe troubles with the VTOL-version. The prototype had to do all the VTOL tests with gear locked down due to a malfunction.
Nice bright photo of this overly ugly pregnant bat.

Where are the eggs this bird is sitting on? Simple; Ugly looking fighter plane! doubleC Mw

A visitor from United States posted Thu February 10, 2011:
To go out on a limb, as it develops, the F-35 is becoming less of a fighter and more of an attack plane with great avionics (F/A-35?). You are free to disagree with me but I feel that the Boeing would have filled the weapons platform role better.

A visitor from United States posted Sat January 8, 2011:
Behold! A bath-tub with wings -- hahaha! I read the to get the X-32 to go VTOL, it had to be taken to sea-level and all non-essential equipment stripped...and it barely lifted-off the deck!

A visitor from - posted Sat October 30, 2010:
Right where the thing belongs. what drug were the boeing designers on when they came up with this thing?

A visitor from United States posted Sat October 30, 2010:
Well I never thought I would ever say this, but the A-380 does not take the top award for "ugly". The F-32 takes the top spot.

A visitor from - posted Sat October 30, 2010:
This thing is pregnant!!! looks more bomber than fighter!

A visitor from Germany posted Sat October 30, 2010:
Looks like a pregnant F-16, with two engines, one RR and the other Pratt&Whiskey, all together on a Cessna 400s nose Wheel assy.

A visitor from - posted Mon September 27, 2010:
Andrey Tupolev used to say: "Ugly planes don't fly". Isn't that right for this particular... uhm... thing. A plane that looks like THAT doesn't have the slightest chance.

A visitor from Canada posted Mon September 27, 2010:
It kinda looks like an F-16 on steroids.

A visitor from Sweden posted Thu August 19, 2010:
It's one ugly mother, that's for sure.

Hiiiiiiii !!!! Could be used with succes to frighten the enemy (psychological warfare)!!! What an ugly aircraft ?

A visitor from France posted Thu August 19, 2010:
Please Mr Dassault: Help this horrible thing !!!

A visitor from - posted Thu July 15, 2010:
Why does it look so happy about being beaten in competition? I think the X-35/F-35 is better though.

Millions of dollars invested, and it only sits in the museum. we hope, this thing flies again for airshow purposes only.

A visitor from Iran, Islamic Republic Of posted Fri March 26, 2010:
Thank GOD for not winning the competition. Such a ugly bird!

A visitor from - posted Sun January 17, 2010:
It looks like it's smiling at us :D

A visitor from Canada posted Tue September 4, 2007:
There were quite a few other reasons. A main one being that the X-32 used engine thrust for the VTOL, while the X-35 used a shaft powered fan. The X-32, therefore was susceptible to stalling due to the engines ingesting hot air while performing VTOL operations.

I just love the wings on this thing.

A visitor from Singapore posted Sat January 27, 2007:
Hmm.. Great plane to be lost in a competition indeed. Because of one minor flaw that the X-32 leave vapour trails when under high G turns led to USAF choosing the X-35 as winner. That's what I read bout from a web site.. If that is really the case its really sad that we are not able to see F-32 in service just of that only reasons... :(

A visitor from United States posted Thu October 26, 2006:
I really like this plane. This is a great shot of it.

A visitor from United States posted Tue April 11, 2006:
Nice photo of this one of a kind bird. Too bad she lost, I thought she was a better pick, tech wise, performance, and for me, looks.
