Remark Photographer
G-BHBP (cn 193N-1211) This is a typical early 1980s scene at Gatwick, from the long-closed superb viewing deck. Tristars from British Airtours and TWA, DC 10s from Laker and British Caledonian and Boeing 747s from Cathay Pacific and Braniff are at the terminal. Dan Air BAC 1-11 and Boeing 727 can be seen as can a Scimitar Airlines Boeing 707

Aaaaah, the good old days. Lovely capture.

Cathay Pacific is still a British company, part of the Swire group

A visitor from United States posted Mon January 10, 2011:
To the visitor who posted on December 12, 2010: Yes, that's a British flag on the Cathay 742 tail. Believe it or not, Hong Kong was once part of the British empire, and within easy memory of some of us old people.

A visitor from - posted Sun December 12, 2010:
British flag on Cathay Pacific tail?

Nice angle. Love it!

Great photo of gatwick just how i remembered it from my childhood..my nan worked for Laker and my granddad at B-Cal so i was lucky as i spent most of my spare time on school holidays airside as security was different then...how i miss those days watching the big orange take off!! such a shame that spectator's was closed!!

A visitor from United Kingdom posted Mon November 13, 2006:
Happy memories!. Historical interest as shot confirms that whilst N610BN was painted in the Ultra scheme, the cream accent stripes were apparently never applied to this airliner

A visitor from United States posted Tue July 18, 2006:

It deserves 5 stars because of its historical value. Please keep similar pics coming!

A visitor from United States posted Mon February 13, 2006:
Yes all the names of yore... including the old Esso before it became Exxon... and Freddie Laker RIP... there was something about that epoch tho... shabbiness of the planes reminds me of how wild those post-deregulation years were... I came in on a PanAm Clipper a year later for a summer at Oxford

A visitor from United Kingdom posted Wed September 21, 2005:
I love long lens shots which condense the image. Stumbling across this shot took me right back to being aprehended by the LGW Police for being rather too close to the runway-entranced via the approach radar on Charlwood Road-PW

A visitor from United States posted Wed September 21, 2005:
Very nice classic shot. I love how "Big Orange" sticks out like a sore thumb.

A visitor from New Zealand posted Wed September 21, 2005:
Big Jet Tail Heaven!! -- look at that hardworking Branniff 747. they sure clocked up the airtime.

A visitor from Germany posted Tue September 20, 2005:
I do like these old-school shots a lot - especially if a Braniff a/c is captured on the pic!

A visitor from United Kingdom posted Tue September 20, 2005:
Hi Mick, nice photo from my childhood spotting days!! Brought back some happy memories.

Incidentally, the a/c with the "S" is a Scimitar 707 - they had a couple of 707s and went bust in 1983.

Neil

Blast from the past! Reminds me of my childhood years when aviation amazed me so much even more than it does today. Thanks for sharing :)

A visitor from New Zealand posted Tue September 20, 2005:
Visitor from Cananda . Hong kong " belonged to the UK till the late 90's , when it was " handed over " to China".
I Believe , looking back, this was the time when Cathay changed it's colours.

A visitor from United Kingdom posted Tue September 20, 2005:
Bravo, Mick,Slice of history! In the 60s and early 70s you could walk right out on the piers and use standard lens cameras! This was the later, higher viewing deck? Cathay Pacific had a Union Jack because Hong Kong was a British Colony, the flag was quietly removed in the run-up to the hand-back to China

A visitor from United Kingdom posted Tue September 20, 2005:
Fabulous! Cathay flew from Hong Kong, which was a British Dependent Territory (part of the UK, in other words) until 1997 when it was handed back to China.

What a great historical snapshot. So many great names that are no longer with us. This shot reminds us all that Air Travel is littered with great names.

A visitor from United States posted Tue September 20, 2005:
Shots like this is why I check this site daily. I love 70's and 80's shots with Old Giants and scenery. Perfect..

A visitor from Germany posted Tue September 20, 2005:
Cathay Pacific have the Union flag, becaus e Hong Kong was British in the 1980's ;)

A visitor from New Zealand posted Tue September 20, 2005:
I remember standing on the same viewing deck in around the 80's with my uncle who is plane mad. This is a real represention of Gatwick in the 80's.
Glad you found this photo.

A visitor from Canada posted Tue September 20, 2005:
Great photo, and why does the Cathay Pacific have a Union Jack flag on it?

A visitor from Germany posted Mon September 19, 2005:
Looks very impressive to me who is born in 1976. I love those old pictures! Good Job.

A visitor from United States posted Mon September 19, 2005:

A visitor from United States posted Mon September 19, 2005:
Thanks for posting this photo.

I remember the 'Great Pumpkins' from going to pick up relatives at D/FW.

Very interesting to see so many liveries in one view.

A visitor from United Kingdom posted Mon September 19, 2005:
Hey, thanks for posting that!! Brings back loads of memories for me! Such a shame about the viewing deck at LGW - I used to spend hours up there...even when I was supposed to be at school miles away in Battersea!

A visitor from United Kingdom posted Mon September 19, 2005:
Yeah and its about time the idiots brought back that Viewing Terrace!

A visitor from United Kingdom posted Mon September 19, 2005:
A great historic shot, bringing back real memories of my spotting as a kid!

The B707 is the back with the S is Scimitar airlines, a cargo carrier I seem to remember.

A visitor from United States posted Mon September 19, 2005:
Yes indeed worth keeping. It's great seeing how the liveries have changed over the years, and in some cases vanished.

A visitor from United States posted Mon September 19, 2005:
What a historical photo. very important to keep. worth of thousand words in this picture.
