Remark Photographer
G-EUOE (cn 1574) A British Airways (BA) plane had to return to Heathrow Airport to make an emergency landing after black smoke was seen coming from an engine. Both runways were closed as passengers and crew used emergency chutes. BA said the Heathrow to Oslo service turned back after a technical fault at 08:43 BST. Witnesses reported seeing flames coming from the engine.

This photo captures what could could have been a disaster. If you look closely at the engine, you can see the cowling appears to be missing and damaged.....

This is just a crazy and rare shot! Great job Alex! It really shows how a minor mistake can lead to something like this.

Congratulations my friend! Awesome photo!

A visitor from - posted Sun May 26, 2013:
This is an excellent view of this side of the incident. I didn't see actual flames in any photo of the incident so far. I work on these every day and it's hard to say exactly what is causing the smoke but there are the main generator cables running on the right side there where the smoke is coming from. If one of those was shorted out it could cause smoke. The fuel lines run on the inboard side so it's not them. There have been other incidents just like this and I don't recall anything being disturbed on the engine in the other incidents. They were unlucky in this incident. Each of these incidents could have been much worse. If you look just under the silver bleed ducts that first run forward and then curve around and down in front of a dark colored box, that is the EEC, Electronic Engine Control computer that is controlling the engine. I think if it is destroyed that the engine will either stay in the last state it was set at or default to full power. But I've never heard of that happening yet. The biggest problem with the cowling being blown off is that they are a part of the fire suppression system. The cowlings cut off oxygen to the fire after the fire bottles are blown. The cowlings help the fire suppressant smother the fire.

Impressive catch Alex! What are you doing in LHR by the way?? Shouldn´t you be in GRU? Great photo!

Right time right place good nervs

A visitor from - posted Sat May 25, 2013:
That's right....pay no attention to the fact that the cowling fell off of both engines. It's funny that no news report I've read so far has even mentioned the fact that the cowlings are not on the engines? Didn't anyone notice that? Either way, this is a fantastic photo of it all. How did you get the air-to-air angle?

A visitor from - posted Sat May 25, 2013:
It is hard work to spot aeroplanes...'hugging the fence'under all weather conditions. Well, your perseverance paid off. Congratulations for capturing a most newsworthy event. Good picture as well.

A visitor from - posted Fri May 24, 2013:
I just saw this on the news. Obviously, as your excellent capture shows, they had trouble with both engines.

A visitor from United Kingdom posted Fri May 24, 2013:
It catches the severity of an emergency situation. Great moment.

A visitor from - posted Fri May 24, 2013:
Both engines damaged. The end could have been really different, good job captain!

Yikes!!!!!

A visitor from - posted Fri May 24, 2013:
Looks like the engine cowlings of both engines have been ripped off, how big is the chance of that happening!!! Luckily it all ended well and that you could witness and photograph this. Roger C.
