This is a terrific image which doesn't conform to the rules of nines but excellent symmetry in the position of the plane with respect to the clouds and wonderful lead in lines in the highlighted clouds at the bottom which bring your eye in the center of interest. B&W in this image is very effective with the clouds and the silouette of the plane; whether this was the choice of the photographer to shot it as a B&W or whether it is a color image with B&W comonents is immaterial.

Eexcellent and scary depiction of wake turbulence!

A visitor from United States posted Sat November 11, 2006:
It made me gasp and say "oh wow!" having read a description of an airplane's normally invisible wigtip vortices and then to actually see them was amazing.

A visitor from United States posted Sat November 11, 2006:
In addition to being a masterpiece of photographer's technique, this photo precisely shows what wake turblulence is all about. It should be a part of every pilot's initial and recurrent training, as it - - quite literally - is worth the thousand words or so which attempt to describe the dangers of wake turbulence to following aircraft.

A visitor from United States posted Fri November 10, 2006:
It captures the vortex trail!!

A visitor from United States posted Fri November 10, 2006:
It's awe-inspiring to actually see what is often an invisible wake.

A visitor from United States posted Fri November 10, 2006:
Aside from the unlikely meteorlogical conditions, and the technical difficulty of even finding the shot, this shot manages to show that many tons of lift also has it's downside, albeit beautiful!

A visitor from United States posted Fri November 10, 2006:

The composition, I had to look twice to convince myself it was a photo and not a painting. The unique shape of the clouds just below the plane and that fabulous light effect below the shape. This is not just planespotting anymore, but art!

A visitor from United States posted Tue September 12, 2006:
The shadowing of the swirls with light from below, the sharpness of the aircraft (as it should be) in contrast to the soft clouds. Kind of interesting when you think about it, those swirls are danger!

A photographer can be lucky but this photo shows the sheer ability of the photographer to put himself in the right place to make visible the way we surf the skies now. The passengers are busy with their lives inside not realising the beauty of the technology that surrounds them.

A visitor from United States posted Wed September 6, 2006:
Most photographers wait a life time for that one instant when the subject, atmospheric conditions, and opportunity all arrive at the same place at the same time. The swirling of the cloud formation by the wing vortex is truly a once-in-a-lifetime shot.

This shot confirms, for me, a sign posted outside the Pilots' Hut of the Royal Aero Club way back when the B707 was first flying into Australia. At that time the Aero Club was operating out of the Perth 'International Airport' - and there was no Tower - so you can appreciate that air traffic was practically non-existent by todays standards. The sign resembled;
"Beware of jet vortex. It is deadly (resembling Dry Thunder-storm Wind Sheer) and invisible. Keep 5 miles clear. Have a safe flight.

Photographers choiche! Just impressive, 5 stars, thank you for sharing.

A visitor from United States posted Tue August 8, 2006:
It's an extremely good visualization of wingtip vortices. This is what they are trying to illustrate in many scientific experiments involving smoke or colored dyes.

A visitor from United States posted Tue August 8, 2006:
Finally - definitive picture of wake turbulence. Always knew what it was, but seeing it makes it real.

A visitor from Slovenia posted Tue August 8, 2006:

A visitor from United States posted Tue August 8, 2006:
Incredible...

A visitor from Australia posted Tue August 8, 2006:
The simple black white composition really helps to highlight the wake. The symmetry of the wake itself is just beautiful with the silouhette of the aircraft. Couple those two things together, you have a work of art.

A visitor from Netherlands posted Tue August 8, 2006:
Instant classic! Awesome photo!

A visitor from United Kingdom posted Tue August 8, 2006:

A visitor from Germany posted Tue August 8, 2006:

A visitor from United States posted Tue August 8, 2006:
What makes this photo so special to me, is that when you take your first look at it you can literally SEE the turbulence. On second look, you can FEEL the turbulence.

For me, the B&W is what makes this such a powerful image.

A visitor from Netherlands posted Tue August 8, 2006:
Pure art!

A visitor from United States posted Tue August 8, 2006:
The picture has an amazing color contrast using a classic B&W color scheme. Love the wingtip vortices in the clouds, one of my favorite things in photography.

A visitor from Mexico posted Tue August 8, 2006:
I think that the cloud's effect is really awesome! and also the color, the contrast, so, I only have 1 question: From where the photo was taken?
