C-GTPO (cn 22556) This air-to-air was taken in the vicinity of Yellowknife, NWT at about 9 pm as the days are getting quite long by early May. Flying the C-46 is Buffalo Airways owner Joe McBryan. Note the frozen lake below.

Well done. I always enjoy the photos with a wide vista of both the plane and the environment that lends perspective and this displays it all very well. Reading the other comments & looking again I realize that must have been quite a plane in its day. Imagine flying over cold, towering windswept mountains, i.e. the hump in it! Thanks

Beautiful plane! Would love to take a ride in one!

I remember these aircraft well, as C-46s in the South Korean Air Force. They always intrigued me. This picture clearly depicts their grace and beauty in the air.

What a great photo of a vintage, historically important, classic beauty! My Dad was a C-46 hump pilot during WWII, but never talked much about his experiences. What I've come to know about this marvelous aircraft-the workhorse of the world's first major airlift operation-and the courageous pilots and crew who flew her from India to China during those treacherous missions over the hump along the "aluminum trail" is that neither aircraft nor crew have ever received enough recognition and credit for their amazing accomplishment and contribution to aviation progress.
When my Dad did talk about the C-46, he usually called it a "bucket of bolts"...Fondly, of course!

Have experienced a ride in the above aircraft. Great old bird. Am a pilot but never had the opportunity to try such a heritage craft.

Wonderful photo. Our family was interned in Japan in WWII. I was a child of six at the end of the war the USAAF flew us out of Atsugi airbase to Okinawa, and the next day to Manila, in a C-46. These were among the main aircraft to fly the 'hump' to Burma. The British took us by ship from Manila to Singapore, then in a large troop carrier ship to Columbo, Bombay and Suez. We were then bussed to Cairo, got stuck there for a few weeks, then were flown in a Sunderland flying boat over several days to our home in South Africa!

Fine in contrast and aperture & speed settings. Skillful in avoiding focusing plane shadow.
