Remark Photographer
B-991L (cn 101) Finished her test flight and just arrived here from Xi an. Although ACAC refers to the ARJ21 as "designed by Chinese with completely independent intellectual property rights", it is being built using tooling provided by the McDonnell Douglas Corporation for licence-production of the MD-90 in China some years ago. Consequently, it bears a strong resemblance to the DC-9 family of aircraft, with an identical cabin cross section, nose profile and tail. The new wing was designed with assistance from Antonov (Ukraine) and engines (from General Electric, USA). [D3S ISO3200 F5.6 1/4sec handheld]

I agree. THere's nothing wrong with copying. It's human nature. But don't claim originality when it's copied.

When I first saw the aircraft I felt enraged at China for stealing the design planes for the DC-9, however after a little more thought... Why is it such a bad thing, we should be glad that this new DC-9 will continue to grace the earths skies. 5* photo my friend, captures all the aspects of it.

I agree with the American friend.I am a student studying aviation in China and when this ARJ21 came out,I was also disappointed because it was so similar to DC9. But anyhow, this is our first step, sooner or later we can make our aircraft absolute Chinese style.

...but if it's a DC9 that's more comfortable, quieter, and more fuel efficient than a 737 or an A320, it'll get more than a few orders! Nice shot. I love the lighting and shadow effects.

A visitor from United States posted Mon January 18, 2010:
Delta should buy these to replace their DC-9's or at least give them some extra coverage that those damn CRJ-900's use. Heck, replace those things and use these

That's actually a nicely looking aircraft! I see more of a 717/MD-95 resemblance but they're close enough.

The truly impressive technical aspect of this image is not the ARJ (although, congratulations to China!) but the D3S. That's ISO3200 and it looks like an ISO200 file from other cameras. Nothing short of amazing.

A visitor from United States posted Sun January 17, 2010:
If it looks, eats, sleeps, and smells like a DC-9, it's a DC-9. Period. Still, nice shot. China should be a little bold and go for originality in its commercial aviation products, though.
