What was the first supersonic airliner? This one! CF-CPG went supersonic on August 21, 1961, eight years before the Tu-144 or the Concorde. With a Douglas flight crew and temporary test registration N9604Z, the DC-8 reached Mach 1.012 in a shallow dive from 52,000 ft (also a record at the time). Delivery to Canadian Pacific followed on November 15th. Retired March 1980 and despite efforts by CP Air employees to save the historic aircraft, it was sold and broken up for parts in Opa Locka, FL.

Oh how I miss that paint scheme and the crackle of those RR Conways. I remember enjoying a couple of flights on this aircraft between YVR-SCL with the technical stop at ACA for fuel and A/C switch at LIM to the DC-8-63 'Skybus' from YYZ to continue onto SCL and then further to EZE. Even on a crappy and hazy/foggy morning at LIM there were two brightly coloured CP Air DC-8s warming up the tarmac with that awesome orange glow! By far, this is my favourite airline paint scheme of all time!! It's so sad that this A/C could not have been saved considering its history. Thanks Gary for reminding me of this beauty all these years later, smiling as I types this.
