crashed 30 Oct 1991 10nm S of its destination Alert, NWT on a flight from Thule, Greenland. It was carrying fuel (steel bladder seen in foreground). The 13 survivors faced absolutely terrible conditions waiting over 30 hours to be rescued, huddling in the tail section. Most were covered with JP5 which came from the ruptured steel fuel bladders. With the frigid temperatures and their Arctic kit covered with fuel the survivors actually froze to the hull of the aircraft. Unfortunately, five personnel perished including the pilot. The nose of the aircraft can be seen lying to the left of the tail section.

What a terrible accident. I wonder why the airplane crashed there. Made me remember the "Andes tragedy" (13 Oct 1972)
