Remark Photographer
LX-ACV (cn 24200/748) Cargolux Flight CV777 from Atlanta Hartsfield-Jackson to Luxembourg Findel is seen here at 38,975’ over north Wiltshire heading 095 degrees and 547 knots (629 mph) a very high speed for a 747. I was sorry to have just missed its transit across the face of the moon. The picture was taken from my mother’s garden in Kemble. (60D; 400mm)

Neither of the above commentators would get a job as a proof reader !!!

Well don't forget Mach is subject to temperature. If it was a fair bit warmer than ISA, that high speed will be equivalent to a lower Mach No. I say 'speed' because the speed written in the description could also be ground speed, in which case if you've got a nice strong jetstream, 547kts is very reasonable... Maybe a little more info from the photographer?

Wow that 0.95 Mach...incredible catch!!....i remember reading that cruise is generally at 0.85 Mach, but the 747 can structurally endure stresses generated on the body up to 1.25 Mach, however, the drag created by shock waves makes it uneconomical to fly at the speed , additionally the shock waves created by the beast would be rather disturbing to people on the ground
