Wouldn't call it 'close'... more like a well calculated V1 and an aircraft performing just as it was designed to. Great photo! 5*

Classic photo!! However, someone mentioned a 'well calculated V1". Sorry to disappoint this person but they don't know what they are talking about! Using almost 10,000ft to get airborne is not what I would call a well calculated V1!! And in any event surely you mean VR!! ;)

Just a blind guess...given that this is about a 10000ft runway, the pilots may have been taking off with de-rated thrust...meaning less than full power. Obviously this plane was heavily loaded, but I can't think of any good reason why the full 10000ft would have been used!

Im sure the pilots must have been quite nervous when they started getting closer to the end of the runway!

Great anticipation combined with spot-on camera positioning and framing makes for a dramatic photo. I think I can feel the sigh of relief from the flight crew! I doubt that the take-off was planned that way!

Ok, you either rotate or pass away... as simple as it ;)

The pilot said: V1, rotate (still not rotating), you can rotate now, I said rotate!!

Loaded to the brink + hot air = late rotate.

Aw ya fooled me! The thumbnail made this look like one of the new 747-8's but alas it's an old photo of a -200!

Looks more like a carrier take-off! Nice photo!

WOW! No room for error there! But it's a cargo bird with nothing but water ahead of them... If they were going to take a chance, this was indeed the time to do it. Still pretty nuts if you ask me!

Nothing unusual for a heavy out of the old Kai Tak

I agree with the poster who wrote that the thumbnail made it look like a 748!! I stared at the thumbnail for some time trying to figure out where in the modern world this type of takeoff could happen. Great Photo!!!
