The reason it has four engines are;
1. To avoid ETOPS hassles.
2. Because higher thrust engines ala 777-300ER weren't available for the 346 at the time it was built, if it were to go with two engines, there wouldn't have been enough thrust for its weight.

This photo clearly explains why Airbus A340-600 is my favorite plane!!!!!!!!!

A visitor from United Kingdom posted Fri May 5, 2006:
Incredible shot, huge wingspan. But i dont like the thick blue line on the nose of the plane, it makes it look like it hsa got a moustache!!!

A visitor from Singapore posted Fri February 24, 2006:
Really Clear Details.
Neat.

A visitor from Brazil posted Thu February 23, 2006:
Definitely impressive.

A visitor from Canada posted Mon February 20, 2006:
WOW, terrific shot taken there. Now if the wingspan of the A340 is this wide, then what would be the wingspan of the A380?? The A380 would be a titanic of the skies.

Now all we need is an exact picture like this of the A380. Good picture. Very clear on a clear bright sunny day

A visitor from Mexico posted Fri February 3, 2006:
Looks like it´s tellin you: "What are you lookin´ at?" ;) Impressive A340 in Cathay colors. T.B.

A visitor from United Kingdom posted Fri February 3, 2006:
Those are not Trent 895s but are Trent 500s. And yes, the aircraft really does need 4 engines, to achieve the necessary safe flight performance. The engineers didn't just add them for the fun of it!

A visitor from Canada posted Fri February 3, 2006:
That really is a very impressive photograph. Your timing is certainly spot on to give us perspective down the fuselage along with some light touching the inside of those fantastic looking engines! Lovely shot mate!

A visitor from United States posted Fri February 3, 2006:
Great background setting for this gorgeous aircraft. Vive la A340!

A visitor from Australia posted Fri February 3, 2006:
Yes the plain need 4 of these engines. the 777er has two 500kN engines. i think these engines are between 250kN and 300kN.

A visitor from United States posted Fri February 3, 2006:
It needs the four engines for its speed and range, with two it is an a330 because the 30 and 40 are built on almost the same fuselage. they are both long range wide body but this 40 has much better range... GREAT STUFF NORBERT!!

A visitor from Mexico posted Fri February 3, 2006:
It looks like it´s tellin you: "What are you lookin´ at?" Sooooo angry. T.B.

A visitor from France posted Fri February 3, 2006:
Now that you've seen the wingspan, imagine the body ... :] Great shot!

A visitor from Germany posted Fri February 3, 2006:
Brilliant

A visitor from Brazil posted Thu February 2, 2006:
Fantastic view!

A visitor from United States posted Thu February 2, 2006:
Nice pic, does that plane or any a340 really need four engines?

A visitor from United States posted Thu February 2, 2006:
Absolutely beautiful! Look at those engines and wingspan

A visitor from Netherlands posted Thu February 2, 2006:
Great capture of the wingspan!

A visitor from United States posted Thu February 2, 2006:
The wing-span captured in the photo is beyond awesome.

A visitor from France posted Thu February 2, 2006:
I love those trent 895 engines, they are so much better than the hair dryers or the 200/300 versions

A visitor from Belgium posted Thu February 2, 2006:
Great!!

A visitor from United States posted Thu February 2, 2006:
The wingspan is so large it almost looks downright silly! its like 100 yards wide!

A visitor from Germany posted Thu February 2, 2006:
Fantastic shot mate, nice plane, stunning quality and a lovely airport with the river.

C.F.

A visitor from Canada posted Thu February 2, 2006:
Clarity and positioning to capture a taxiing Airbus. It certainly captures the wingspan of the aircraft. It brings to mind the "How does it get off the ground?" sort of question.
