CZ348 enroute CDG-CAN. Just a few minutes before sunrise, a severe thunderstorm on our route above Hubei Province forced us to deviate and climb to FL401. Lightnings were clearly visible despite the very thick clouds. Taken from seat 31A [F8.0 0.8s ISO200]

The colors and light are simply spectacular! In particular, I love the lightning in the clouds. I have seen this phenomenon only once and many years ago, while landing at Geneva in the early-morning darkness aboard a Swissair CV990. I haven't forgotten the spectacle, and this photo brings very fond memories of that trip.

Amazing capture!! But I don't see the point of climbing to FL 401.. why 401??

Severe thunderstorm...yeah right. These clouds top at most 25,000 feet and there is not even an anvil. Just a regular thunderstorm but you don't want to fly directly into it or above for the sake of passenger comfort.

Nice capture although not that unusual for those who fly often, I've enjoyed such views several times.

FL401 is definitely a typo, there's no such FL, I'm sure the photographer meant FL410.

Metric levels are used in China so it might have become FL401 after the conversion
