Being old enough to clearly remember WW2, we used to see a lot of photos of the "Mars" and other big flying boats, but of course being in standard Navy livery, you never saw any that were anywhere near this beautiful.

It is just so fortunate that there is a "mission", important enough to be able to justify the tremendous expense of keeping and maintaining these wonderful planes from another age not only still flying, but still doing a much needed and important job.

And congratulations to the gentleman 9 posts down, who used to fly in the USCG planes out of Kodiak;
thank you for your outstanding thoughts and comments, and thank you for your service!

"I think she is the only big flying boat still in use".

A visitor from Canada posted Fri April 4, 2008:
Nice crisp photo - I have the best opportunity to take very dramatic photos of them (there are two flying Mars) from above while working, but sadly, our perspex windows won't allow such clarity.
Looks like Steve has the overhead hatch open during the pickup.

I was lucky enough to be at lake elsinore to see the "mars" take off. but no camera.

What a Marvelous piece of areonautical Architecture, a real, live, operational, smaller version of the "Spruce Goose" An extraordinarily glamorous "splashboat" The majesty of T.O. power, cowls open, and finally coming to life, "lift-off" "Mad-ox", USN, Ret.

That certainly is a beauty. A wonderful sight to see.

Superbly framed and lit, this could almost have been a shot from the Golden Age of the flying boats.

A visitor from Australia posted Mon November 5, 2007:
I like aircraft of this era, the latest airliners are rather boring to me.

A visitor from United States posted Sun November 4, 2007:
I qualified in the Grumman Albatross as a USCG aircrewman, and flew in them all over Alaska out of USCG Base Kodiak ... an envrionment that tested them to the limit. They were soon replaced by the C-130H model Lockheed Hercules, and every time I see these wonderful old Mars tankers, I see the best of the "Herc" and the "Goat" combined in them.

This shot is particularly bittersweet for anyone has flown on large seaplanes and amphibs, as it catches that delicious moment when the plane climbs up on the step, becoming more "bird" than "boat" ... a moment that each crewmember can't help anticipate by leaning forward against the shoulder harness and trying to urge the bird along. I lean forward in my chair now, forty years later, remembering.

Some of the "lifer" enlisted crewmen I flew with had flown in the Coast Guard's Martin P5Ms, and said they did not miss having to don cumbersome rubber "poopy suits" in the winter to wade into the water up their armpits and attach the accessory wheels to the planes when they needed to be brought ashore for maintenance.

What a beautiful sight! Just like having the cavalry coming.... thousands of litres of fire retardant in a single drop! I know here in BC they're a sight for sore eyes during forest fire season!
