27 September 1987,Capt Arthur Piercy, flying a Mirage F1CZ, was hit in the tail area by a head-on R-23R missile from this MIG 23ML flown by Major Alberto Ley Rivas. Piercy managed to land but due to damage had no brakes and the aircraft rolled off the end of the runway. The nose gear broke off and he was ejected. The chute failed to open and Piercy sustained serious injuries that left him paralised. A great man, who would love to meet the man that shot him down, 25 years ago.
