Interesting picture, and well-taken shot of the F28. If I'm not mistaken the F/O is gesturing to spectators on Maho Beach while the captain turns the aircraft onto the runway. Shouldn't the F/O be paying attention to the operation of the aircraft rather than skylarking?

Looks like part of the pre-takeoff checklist for this airline, since there are other photos (on this site) depicting the same behaviour on the same aircraft by diffrent F/O. Imagine this happening on any other major airport :) I can not...

Ha ha great pic! Look at all the boring people who have commented crying about how you are not allowed to have fun in life. He is leaning out of the cockpit window not flying upside down under the palm trees. Geez people!

If his work is done...why not! But imagine, this would happen in FRA, LHR, CDG.....

As a private pilot myself and a frequent flier, I personally am not bothered about the F/O in this photo as I know the pre-TO checks would be complete before taxing into position, and since taxing is done by the capt., this F/O isn't having his fun at the expense of duty in this moment. And in fact it is a cool shot. That said, if this were my airline I would not be thrilled about this display when the aircraft is moving, let along just seconds from perhaps the most critical proceedure in any flight. Certainly sets a bad example to passengers (no - not the ones actually on the plane, so don't even go there) and defies rules about cockpit crew being fastened anytime the a/c is moving? This could also easily be disconcerting to the average flier who tends to get jitters right before T/O. In all, I would prefer my crew to have this kind of "fun" when the a/c is parked securely and not during a moment when they should be appearing at their most professional. Just my 2 cents, and feel free to call me a bore if you like!

That's very cool. Since safety is not compromised, I do not see anything inappropriate in the F/O's behavior. Congrats with the fun picture.

Being profesional doesn't mean that fun is just a word you are not even allowed to spell. If you enjoy your profession I enjoy your flying.

It seems a little awkward, but I guess it's simply part of (Dutch) Antillean nature and culture to be somewhat more exuberant about things in life, at least more than Dutch people and quite a few other nations too, I bet. As long as this proud F/O has got his hands and mind on the controls when they t/o, land or dock, and doesn't fall out :)...

If I was an F/O and flying in that location, I'd be doing the same thing! So long as what he's doing is safe, I don't mind. For those who don't like it remember that the straitlaced western culture is not always right.

"Yes, we have the Fokker in sight." - shouldn't have done that.

Absolutely love the shot, capturing the spirit of aviation for sure...Now for the photographer, was the airplane holding short or actually on the move? With the airplane holding short, it's obvious that the F/O is just doing his pre-contamination check after deicing...his fingers are obviously showing that the wing surface didn't have contaminants more than the allowance of a couple of inches? Nice job!

It's even cooler when I see this picture for the first time on A.net and realize that the ''First Officer/Beach crowd animator'' is actually my old PPL instructor! Great Balls of Fire Djuri!

Considering whether the signal is: Happy landing or just takeoff checklist complete.
Not something you see every day.

I would like to say that I would rather have an F/O that is willing to share his enthusiam for flying to those who come to Maho for that very same reason. Some people may say he is not taking safety in consideration. I say that he is. He is doing a last minute windshield cleaning!
