I love it. It's cute, it's rational and even, when you imagine the gear up, kind of elegant.
Looks more like a cargo carrier, has no side windows .
Hotrod airplane! Look how LOW it is. :-))
Yes! this exact airplane was actually operated by the Dominican Air Force in the mid 50's, but was the personal airplane of Ramfis, Trujillo's son, was used mainly for personal pleasure flying in the beginning, but rumours said it was also ill famed as it was also used for dropping some of the regime's oppositioners in the caribbean sea, dissapearing them in the final years of the dictatorship. This airplane ended being the HI-27 in civil registry for several decades, the last flight of this Aero Commander (that i Recall) was done in the early 80's, maybe 1983, after that being neglected inside a hangar in what was Herrera airport (MDHE). I knew the last owner, wanted to restore the aircraft, but his health and age prevented him for doing it. After the closure of MDHE the aircraft went back to the FAD unflyable for a static restoration. the last time i saw it was inside dusting out in a hangar corner. One curious thing is that the airplane has the DGAC (directorate of Civil Aviation) painted on the side, but also has painted the Four Stars General Rank Ramfis trujillo used in his uniform! This are not facts, not fairy tales, it's just the way as one airliner fan heard, saw, and lived this little part of history. ;0)
The plane isn't ugly (a question of taste anyhow) but a beautiful piece of flying metal, when properly maintained and not left in a hangar in the Domincan Republic.
I really like this plane. It is one of my favorite in Flight Sim
I wonder how long it's been sitting there. Doesn't all too long.
Ugly, don't think so my Swedish friend. An ugly plane would be the ones built in your country, no offense.
Ugly? I actually quite dig the design of the Aero Commander. This particular one could certainly be less dusty, but I guess it's historic dust.
The photo shows the unusual features of Aero Commanders such as that stubby front U/C, the entrance door under the wing (beware of exiting while the prop is turning!) and the deep body housing the passenger area. I flew in one of these years ago and found it extremely comfortable although a bit noisy.
This must be one of the ugliest planes ever built. Nice photo and story though.
