AP-BCD (cn 23297/1122) It all started for this new airline company Emirates in 1985 and I was able to see their single airplane (leased from PIA) on Boxing day in 1985. In a few years Emirates would operate the biggest fleet of Airbus A380s.

What a company can do with the backing of a rich few and the government helping out. Money is the great stabilizer. Emirates is nothing special. They've never had to slug it out in the industry without "Daddy's Money."

Good Bye AP-BCD.

A historic picture. The humble beginning of one of the world's leading airlines. They've come so far in such a brief time.

A visitor from United States posted Wed July 17, 2013:
I bet in 1985 most people who saw this plane didn't know that in a few years Emirates would be one of the most successful airlines in the world :)

Lot of memories with this particular aircraft as I traveled lot of time on this. Particularly I recalled when I traveled from Lahore to Multan on this aircraft and Captain was my friend and I got the opportunity to travel in the cockpit. I never knew at that time that this particular aircraft was the starting point for Emirates.

To think that emirates started out with this small 737 and now operate nothing but widebodies

A visitor from - posted Thu March 22, 2012:
Great foto as it is very rare occasion depicting the modest start of one of the mightiest airlines nowdays.

The scanning equipment has improved a lot lately and also my scanning skills. Newer scans looks much better...Thank you for all your compliments and comments about this picture..

With a slightly better scan this slide looks richer than any new digital shot of Emirates. Great historic picture! Humble.. but "well capitalized" beginning.

Beautiful photo !!!! sad to see the situation of PIA right now though

A visitor from - posted Thu April 14, 2011:
Actually Emirates began operations with two aircraft wet leased from PIA. The two PIA aircraft leased out to Emirates were Boeing 737-340 (AP-BCD) and Airbus A300B4-203 (AP-BBM).

A visitor from - posted Thu December 30, 2010:
PIA not only provided aircraft but also cockpit and cabin crewe and other operational staff to Emirates in the very begining. "Shoaib"

It is amazing to see how Emirates has grown up in 25 years. From 1985 to 2010 this single aircraft airline became world # 1 international passenger-kilometers airline. All other top airlines (world # 2 to # 10) are older than Emirates. They were already well established airlines when Emirates was born. Emirates managed to overtake all of them and reached the top. This is what being competitive means.

A visitor from United States posted Mon November 15, 2010:
Most of the gaint establishments today had a small start. Emirates is one of them. While other popular airlines of 1980s like Air India or Pakisthan Intl have gone down today, this kid of 1980s has grown up to become one of the world's best airlines....Also, nice to see same paint scheme and logo maintained for over a quarter century. Before reading comment I thought Emirates has recently started 737 service.

This beautiful airline first aircraft is from PIA.Now emirates is a world class airline.Still PIA is world class in my heart

And who said western countries are rich?

A visitor from - posted Sat July 24, 2010:
Goes to show that you should "not despise the day of small beginnings". Without this kind of start they wouldn't possibly be where they are today....and still going strong(er).

A visitor from Bahamas posted Sat July 24, 2010:
Great pic! Emirates should serve as a model to the U.S.International carriers... if you really, really value people, they will reward you with consistent patronage, great referrals - and phenomenal airline growth!

Interesting to see an airplane as small as the 737 wearing Emirates colors we see them on 777's and 380s if u do it right u can make anything grow

Impressive history. Ths shot is 25 years old and that means Emirates is a pretty young airline and when you see how big the airline today is...it just takes your breath.

A visitor from - posted Mon April 26, 2010:
I don't think Emirates is the best airline, but surely this photo confirm how fast the company has grow up, from a single-jet airline to the biggest A380 customer! Wow!

A visitor from China posted Wed March 3, 2010:
EK kept its logo for 25 years. This is unusual for morden airlines.
