A visitor from United States posted Sat October 16, 2010: Well if there is more than one of them then the time to fill is irrelevant as the others can be putting water on the fire while the others are filling. Not sure what the other tankers hold but 20K gallons is alot of water!
A visitor from France posted Mon August 9, 2010: Very impressive and technical prowess, but I'm skeptical about the finality of this monster: How long to fill the water tanks, wich load factors apply, maneuverability ? (We have in France example of two Dash-8 conditionned: Pilots prefers CL-415 or Fire-Cat !!!) ...Probably OK for fires on flats territories, but I can't imagine this water bomber on moutains of South of Europe during summer fires ...

A visitor from United States posted Mon August 2, 2010: They just had one of these in operation for the Crown fire here in Los Angeles. They were showing it performing low level passes only a few hundred feet above the ground during it's water drop. It was surreal watching it.

Takes ages, one of the reasons why seeing this big waterbomber in real actions is an unlikely scenario. What I'm interested in: Why on earth did they perform at Hahn Airport?? Was there some kind of Airshow? Never seem to have heard of anything..
A visitor from France posted Mon August 2, 2010: I would guess it's filled with a pipe at the aircraft's base, which would mean quantity versus rotation rate. In France, I think the smaller planes with retardant are filled that way, ready to take off to slow down the fire, until canadairs come in action (with less water than this evergreen jumbo, but a much higher rotation rate and precision).

Classic thundering aluminum overcast with the contents of a large swimming pool blasting down on your butt from above! Large compressed air tanks push out the water. Hunker down boys here she comes!

A visitor from United States posted Wed August 19, 2009: Regarding the weight; max load is just shy of 20,000 gallons (if I remember correctly). With this volume of water, T/O weight is still well below max for the 747-200.
