The French were very interested in the de Havilland Vampire, and initially ordered 30 ex-RAF F.1s in 1948 for familiarisation, followed by 94 ex-RAF FB.5s in 1949 for first-line squadron use. This led to local licensed production of 187 FB.51s by Sud-Est. These were followed by the Rolls-Royce Nene-powered Mistrals (all production Vampires used the RR Gnome engine). The French built 93 SE.532s and 150 SE.535s (with a modified Nene engine). Preserved in the Musée de l'Air et de l'Espace.
