Its amazing how things change! That would be comparable to a Premium Economy seat today.

Fantastic photo -- really evocative of a time and place in contemporary air travel that is long gone. To be somewhat pedantic, although those might be 1970s era first class seats, they are definitely Clipper Class seats from the 1980s. I recall curling up on them in the (usually) empty upper deck of trans-Atlantic flights. The photo also captures Pan Am's leather replacement for the once ubiquitous thin white antimacassar. I remember this being pretty novel at the time.
