For the Argentine visitor: its not that Russian aircraft use radioactive material its just that every radar antennae its built with very powerful magnets and as you should know a radar is a very powerful microwave just like the one you use at home only more powerful.

All commendation to the pilot who manage to fly this bird in such a bad condition.

A visitor from Argentina posted Thu August 20, 2009:
By the way: I've noticed that many Soviet/Russian aircraft, both military and civil, have this radioactive symbol near their noses. On the other hand, I've never seen this in any Western aircraft. Why do Russian aircraft use radioactive materials in their radars?

A visitor from United Kingdom posted Thu August 20, 2009:
What a mess...

A visitor from Estonia posted Thu August 20, 2009:
The radiation symbol is for the radar housed in the nose cone. Good thing they had the repair kit (duct tape + platic wrap) at hand. :-) Very nice and interesting catch, thanks for sharing this!

Ouch, that does'nt look healthy (neither does the amount of previous operators by the look of the paint job! :D) I also just noticed the radiation symbol... whats that for?!
