Indisputably the best Italian fighter used during World War II, the fantastic performance of the Veltro came too late to save the declining fortunes of the Italians in the War. Powered by a license-built Mercedes engine, the Veltro first flew in April 1942. Ing. Castoldi created an aircraft of incredible performance, using all his knowledge from his mighty Schneider Trophy floatplane racers. The sublime example now preserved at the Italian Air Force museum.
