The sheer nearness of both the airplane and the checkerboard really make the point of how diffthe clarity of the picerent the approach and landing must have been. also, the ckarity of the pic and the steepness of the bank that close to ground complete the story.

The picture of this DC-10 coming in add such an odd angle as it lines up to the runway makes for a more interesting photo

The foreground (aircraft) is extremely well focused, and clear. The background is also well focused, in that you can see the braces on the post atop the wall. You can also see what appears to be lights in the middle of the checkerboard, and the starboard engine exhaust distorts the radio tower behind the plane. Excellent picture.

The plane and background are very clear and precise. The checkerboard is in perfect view, too.

No height perspective-thought it was taking off.

Wow! The passengers might be feeling a little concerned by the degree of bank the pilot is doing so close to the ground. As a 8,500 hour B-737 Captain, this certainly would have my full attention!

It explains very well what you had put in words in your answer to the question that was asked.

The clarity and close-up of the airplane itself.

Incredible picture - The checkerboard being an after thought when compared to the right turn the pilot executes moments before touch down!!

Unusual landing configuration for aircraft

It shows a shot of aviation history from Hong Kong. The checkerboard was a navigation aid at Kai Tak Airport in HK.

It is a rather dramatic picture of a plane on either entry or landing that shows the entity of the checkerboard site at Hong Kong.

As a pilot I am very comfortable
in these conditions on a difficult
vrf approach. Thanks very much.

The angle it is approaching denotes hands on skill in landing. To often pictures just are vanilla, just a side boring and static. Wheels down and flaps set, you feel the ground coming up at you. fc

The old hong kong kai tak airport was a big challenge for approaches and this checkerboard was an aid to pilots who needed to turn during final approach.

The plane in the foreground adds good perspective.

I'm no judge but the clearity is just great, it's just as if was there in person to see this . no photograher so have no idea what kind of equipment it takes. hope to see more of this quality.

Photo is sharp and clear, particularly the aircraft. however, it appears the jet may be accelerating because it came in too low. could be it is ready to stall out. did they make it? all landing gear is down so it makes one wonder. scarey!

This approach to the old hong kong airport was very unique, as was the airport itself. any picture of this unusual approach is breathtaking. more so if you were a passenger or pilot crew member making a landing at kai tak international.

Great picture of the challenging approach to the old Hong Kong airport..a sharp right turn required at the checkerboard to line up with runway.

I would be interested in how high the plane is at this point. It would be an interesting approach. I hope the pilot warned the passengers before attempting!

Just a great photo of plane and checkerboard. This is one of those "pictures" which is worth a thousand words.

The checkerboard, with it's red and white colors, must be so clear for the pilot to pick up when flying in to land. I wonder what aircrfat was flyng alongside this dc- 10 to take such a spectacular picture!

If this was shot with a powerful lens, it might be an optical illusion. Long lenses make the background look closer thanit actually is.

I never had the "privilege" of flying as a passenger into Hong Kong--it sounds like it was pretty hairy!
