The preserved wreckage of WWII vintage Japanese Reisen (Zero) BII-124 on display at the Darwin Aviation Museum, located at Darwin Airport, Winellie NT. A machine gun, the engine and propeller are displayed in front of the aircraft. This Zero was flown by Sgt Pilot Hajime Toyoshima during the first Japanese bombing raid on Darwin on 19Feb1942. The engine siezed due to a 303 bullet piercing the oil tank, and she crashed on Melville Island. I also photographed pieces of Reisen V-173 at Port Moresby, in 1975.

Very Interesting. Last month I interviewed (Lieutenant Syd Sharp ex R.A.N.) who has evidence that he shot down this Zero during the first big raid on Darwin with a .303 Army rifle.
Cheers,
Brenz Kriewaldt (ex R.A.A.F)
