The J8M1 Shusui was a rocket-powered interceptor based on the Me-163 Komet. Difficulties in shipping an example of the Komet to Japan resulted in the aircraft being reverse-engineered from a flight manual and other limited documentation. A prototype of the J8M1 made a single powered flight on July 7th 1945. This is one of two surviving airframes left, on display in the Planes of Fame Museum.

This is an extremely rare bird. It cost the Japanese government around 20,000,000 DM for the plans and rocket motor. The motor was lost when the submarine carrying it was sunk. The Japanese did an amazing job of producing this aircraft on a very short time scale.
